The Service is amazing. The attention paid to the food is marvellous. But sadly I didn’t enjoy it. It felt like the trying so hard to be unique with the food that it lost the heart vegetarianism. I craved some vegetables when I left. I’m...More

My wife's birthday meal started with a beautiful cucumber medley with sticky rice. It started going downhill. From then on, fresh vegetables were not on the menu. We got a biscuit coated in tomato soup powder with mashed potato. Lovely charred spring onions spoilt by...More

Two of us went for dinner on Monday evening. The main body of the restaurant was full so we were in the area slightly outside. As a result, it felt a little 'cold' in atmosphere - and my companion had to put her coat on,...More

The restaurant is nestled away in a side street of a side street – and it doesn’t help that the new buildings have no street signs yet – so it might be difficult to find for those who aren’t familiar with this part of town...More

Tucked away behind Chancery Lane, this restaurant was gorgeous! Low key, understated, welcoming and with a gentle atmosphere. The service was quiet, sharp and knowledgeable. The food was punchy with surprising ingredients that had bursts of flavours and pleasing textures. Beautifully presented and so an...More

We visited Vanilla Black based on its reputation for gourmet vegetarian and vegan food. The food was excellent although the tasting menu at £55 for five courses is not particularly good value as portion sizes are small and it does not even include any coffee...More

I'd been meaning to go to this restaurant for some time but was never really attracted by the menu even though I'm vegetarian. I quite like pasta even though vanilla black prides itself on not having any on the menu. But this time I was...More

Description
Your mother's mantra of "eat your vegetables" probably never brought to mind dishes quite like this. Vanilla Black restaurant, originally from York but now located in the City of London near Chancery Lane, smashes the stereotype of bland, lentil-laden hippie dishes. Instead, Vanilla Black takes a modern, imaginative and ambitious approach to vegetarian cuisine. Result? It is the only vegetarian restaurant in London that's recommended in the Michelin Guide. At Vanilla Black, it's not "vegetarian cooking", it's "vegetable cuisine". The dining areas are spacious and done with art deco-esque flair, Vanilla Black's cool and comfortable dining room sets the stage for its innovative cuisine. Dishes such as hickory smoked duck egg and Ducketts Caerphilly pudding and sweet potato vindaloo with saffron risotto are sure to make an impression on even the most diehard carnivore. Vanilla Black's desserts like carrot cake and orange sorbet with crystallised coriander delight the palate.
