We were a large party that had booked well in advance for a friend's birthday, but we're really disappointed by both the food and service here. Bad points: sandwiches were minuscule and drying out by the time it got to us, more akin to something you would get in an unimaginative sandwich buffet at a conference. The cakes were not... More

I went here for afternoon tea on the weekend and was really impressed. Lovely atmosphere with a buzz, great food and a great view of St. Paul's. The staff were also really friendly and willing to help with any queries. I'll definitely be back... the roasts downstairs in the bar looked amazing!

Visited the Swan restaurant for an impromptu evening dinner (on a Monday). Wasn't sure what to expect. I had absolutely no need to be concerned. Situated by the banks of the Thames, the Swan has a modern yet comfortable bar downstairs. Nothing rowdy - (not that type of bar) but a bar with a lovely ambiance, where you can sit,... More

For about eight pounds , you get a half of a traditional English breakfast , which isn't too bad . On a recent visit to The Globe , we needed a place to grab a quick breakfast and founded this cute place . The decor was modern [ Chip and Joanna meets metropolitan] and the food was warm and filling... More

Very poor, slow and disappointing service. We were not attended to at all by the staff. They forgot about us and we felt ignored and felt those having the Sunday roast were attended to well. No member of staff came to ask us how everything was or for more re-fills of tea. After several attempts of getting their attention we... More

Dear Amritakalyan Sorry to hear of your poor Sunday experience and please accept my apologies. Only this week we have changed the takeaway boxes for afternoon tea with more capacity though there is no excuse the flippant manner of service tea by the staff. I will discuss your comments with the restaurant team. As of Mothering Sunday 26th March we... More

The night began with the waiter pour a full glass of red wine on top of my friend's brand new baby blue cashmere sweater; her underwear, skirt, stocking, bag all got wine on it. We all kept our cool and smile and quietly moved from the comfortable sofa seat to the corner table while waiter cleaned the mess. My friend... More

We were using a Christmas present meal gift offer and so chose from the pre-Theatre menu which had 3 choices for each course. The food was beautifully presented, hot and just gorgeous; sensible portion sizes and the best bread I've had for ages! Every dish was delicious from duck rillettes to braised beef to the chocolate pot. The atmosphere was... More

My late husband and I used to eat there regularly (upstairs) , but it was first time since he left us. Sat downstairs this time and had Fish and Chips for old time sake, as light and delicious as ever! Desserts are a must... Minor points : Waiter gave us the plates instead of next table as they had ordered... More

Visited after a show at the Globe as part of a family birthday celebration. The restaurant was busy but with a good atmosphere. Table next to us was a bit close. I phoned in advance as we were offered the theatre menu and one if our party couldn't find anything. However there was choice on the a la carte menu.... More

The wine (which is seriously overpriced, btw) was served in a very sloppy way, with spillages etc. Towards the end of our meal, our Chianti was poured with such distain that the great chunks of "crust" slopped into two of our glasses went entirely unnoticed by the "couldn't-care-less" staff member. When the chief wine person was asked about it, she... More

Dear MGraley May I apologise for the lackadaisical service you received when dining in the restaurant. I have spoken to the restaurant team to ensure more care is shown and training offered in serving wine with possible sediment. To discuss the wine, the Chianti featuring on the wine list has recently won the Decanter platinum award - wine of the... More

Staying in Southwark

Neighbourhood Profile
Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.
