Rules is of course one of the oldest restaurants in London and is something of an icon. Just walking in there you feel like you are going back in time. However, in terms of efficiency and service they are up there with the best modern restaurants. Our waitress was amazingly attentive and quick. Even though she was serving many tables... More

It had been several years since we had visited Rules, London's oldest restaurant. And we had forgotten what an experience it is! When it's on form it really is very difficult to beat. It's not a place for the faint-hearted. Very roomy, usually busy, extremely traditional and offering a menu which has 'gout' written all over it - not that... More

I hadn't been for about 20 years, but this was simply one of the best all-round meals I've ever had. All courses were excellent with good wine to complement. The cheeseboard and port was superb. Our waitress was faultless and added to the great experience. Couldn't do it every week... but really memorable!

We had lunch here on Sunday, my family had kept the venue an secret. From the moment we entered to the moment we left it felt comfortable and welcoming. We arrived a little early, we had a drink upstairs first until our table was ready. The restaurant very busy and staff all working flat out, but it was seamless and... More

Went with 2 friends visiting from NYC and we were all very impressed. They don't have to rely on It's rich and charmingly visible history of being the oldest restaurant in London because their food is so excellent - all our appetizers and mains were excellent and we shared one dessert (a/k/a "pudding"). My monkfish wrapped in bacon was the... More

Usually visit here at Christmas but hadn't been able to due to train strike. This was a birthday treat and it didn't disappoint. Wonderful Braised Lamb and Fruit crumble. Traditional decor, feels like you are back in time. Very memorable indeed. Our table was booked for 3.00 as we had a theatre visit in the evening. I love this place,... More

Rules, the oldest restaurant in London, may well have been the watering-hole for the glitterati of the past (or even those of today), and one enters into a picture-plastered red velvet womb of a dining room which almost explodes with a theatrical evocation of Edwardiana as it possibly never was. The menu, too, being appropriately 'stout 'n steaky' with prime... More

This was private dining upstairs and a very good occasion it was too in the Graham Greene room. Champers to start followed by group pictures outside back to more bubbles before eventually sitting down to smoked salmon followed by roast beef. I should apologise for my tardy contribution as this was at the end of November and I only just... More

Description
Established by Thomas Rule in 1798, Rules is a Covent Garden institution and the oldest restaurant in London. Tuxedoed waiters glide around the formal interior, decorated with antique sketches, where plush banquettes offer a discreet retreat from the main dining room. The whole-hearted menu of traditional British food specialises in classic game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings, featuring game birds, roe deer and Belted Galloway beef fresh from the establishment's own High Pennines estate. The wine list is a French-led affair, or there are native draught beers served in silver tankards.
