I've been here twice recently - once in November on a Saturday night with 7 friends and more recently last Wednesday night with 6 other friends and both times thoroughly enjoyed this place. Great menu - starters are around £8 mains £18-22. I had crab risotto and my friend next to me the mussels - both delicious. For main I... More

Went in for a quick "one for the road" at 10.45pm on a Thursday. On the way to the bar, told by a staff member very crudely that they had stopped serving (and then he walked off with a smug smile), as it's a small bar and had been numerous times before asked the bar man for a beverage anyway.... We visited on a Sunday and thankfully we had booked and judging by how many people were turned away we had done the right thing. Friendly staff. We chose the cauliflower soup to start with which we both enjoyed. My husband had the chicken and I had the cod both very good. They had run out of the Chardonnay I... More

The service was truly awful. Rude unhygienic waiter. We asked for two small side plates, the waiter used the same dirty cloth he used to wipe table to wipe our plates! I watched him do it, he turned his back pretending I didn't see. I asked him "did you use the same cloth, he said that was a mistake?" ...he... More

This is one of my favorite neighborhood spots. I brought my parents here for an early dinner after a performance at The Globe and they just loved it. The seasonally changing menu emphasizes fresh, local ingredients and innovative twists on English cuisine. The intimate atmosphere and shabby-chic decor make The Garrison feel like a home away from home.

Had visited a few years ago but kept away as found all of the food far too salty. Decided to give it another try for breakfast on a Sunday, but really wish I hadn't. Inside it's nicely done, and having been slightly bamboozled by the menu we ordered and waited. And waited. And waited. We saw plenty of other things... More

Lovely buzzy atmosphere, curious french style decor. The food is good too however I wouldn't go JUST for the food. Its filling and tasty but may lack dazzle, however some places with dazzling food can also lack atmosphere, this has HEAPS. go with friends for a nice reasonably priced filling meal and a good glass of wine on a weekend.

Starter was a poor and misdescribed imitation of a tomato, basil and mozzarella salad. Badly presented and with three basil leaves among a mountain of rocket. Burger was ok. Atmosphere was jolly enough but the excruciatingly slow service spoilt everything and we will not be returning.

I've visited 'The Garrison' for drinks before and so knew how popular it is and how busy it can get,but I had no idea of just how popular and busy until I visited for Sunday lunch with three friends. Wow! the place is organised madness and those guys who served everyone deserve medals for coping with the intense pressure. Aside... More

A friend and I had a mid-week lunch and catch-up at the Garrison. The place was heaving - which is generally a good sign or a sign of good marketing. The decor is "distressed" - intentionally so I think. The table that we were ushered to was cosy, i.e. cramped, and I got a feeling that my chair was going... More

Staying in Southwark

Neighbourhood Profile
Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.
