Once you discover a place like this, it's really hard to return to almost every other pub in the area. That is particularly the case when one of your local competitors is the 'original' Gastro Pub, The Eagle, on nearby Farringdon Road. The beer here at the Gunmakers is stored and served to absolute perfection, and the food is just... More

Four of us meet here once a year. I didn't think about it at the time, but there can't have been any music as we could all converse without straining. It's an old fashioned intimate pub serving a couple of real ales. You wouldn't go there specifically for the food, but it was reasonable value for money - about £10... More

Met with friends for lunch and a few beers having eaten here in the past and always found it good. However it turns out the pub changed hands about a year ago so instead of a good choice from the menu or some daily specials, we were left to choose from either salads or burgers. The burgers were OK although... More

Had a great time after a night out pubbing in London's Clerkenwell neighborhood. Our hotel was around the corner so we thought we'd try this craft beer gem. Had a couple beers that we didn't see elsewhere. Liked the nice friendly laidback atmosphere.

Nice little joint. Clerkenwell seems to be stuffed with 'chain' style pubs. The same old stuff. The same beer, the same frozen food re-heated & put on a plate. Yes you pay a little more but then to be honest I would prefer to pay a little more & have a nice pint of something & some food that was... More

Didn't expect much when I chanced upon this place, nestled between building sites and skips on Eyre street hill. Had a really funny chat with two of the staff who managed to persuade me to try some quite funky sounding beers which actually turned out to be alright. They pointed me towards the pretty outdoor area which I didn't expect... More

Went here on a Friday night after work, I was told to come early to ensure a spot in the Beer Garden. Nice little pub with a quirky design. Drinks were reasonably priced, as far as London goes. Great burgers menu, with options for vegetarians as well. Had a great time and got great service - including table service; unusual... More

I popped in here to have a drink on an extremely hot afternoon and found a delightful crew of staff who were chatty and friendly and the barmaid Hannah made me a fantastic G&T which was made exactly right and presented beautifully. The other people there all seemed to be enjoying themselves and frankly the food looked very good and... More

Well what can you say about this place... I should of been put off by the two 18 going on chubby legged peroxide blondes sitting outside on the pavement in "short shorts" (the Sun had threatened to emerge) braying "it's so sanfrisco darling" in a mock (badly done Sloane accent) ... But I braved it.... beer was reasonably priced to... More

The Gunmakers is an independent pub in a Clerkenwell back street with a loyal band of regulars. Our focus is on British cask ales and ciders (we offer seven) and proper pub cuisine prepared from fresh ingredients by our own chef. The wine's pretty good too thanks to our relationship with a speciality wine merchants (who just happen to be regular customers too). What we do, we do well, and we don't bother with the rest: so there's no piped music, cocktails, alcopops, tea or coffee. Oh, and you can't book a table or an "area" in the evening. We prefer spontaneous people who aren't afraid to mix with others. The building was constructed in the 1840s and is the sole survivor of what was once a dense terrace of narrow houses, now surrounded by larger industrial and commercial buildings constructed many years later. It was briefly a riflemaker's workshop, before being converted to a beerhouse before 1861. It has traded as a pub ever since. London's Little Italy grew up around the area, with Italian culture holding sway for around a century before the community dispersed in the 1950s/60s.

Staying in Clerkenwell

Neighbourhood Profile
Owing to its proximity to Smithfield Market – the site of an ancient meat market which remains in operation today – Clerkenwell boasts a plethora of globally renowned restaurants, fabulous local eateries, and some of London's favorite pubs. This isn't merely a focal point for all things foodie though. Spend enough time wondering through the area's maze of streets and you might become accustomed to the litany of slinky models passing between Clerkenwell's handful of fashion houses. Far outnumbering the models are craftspeople and designers, many of them are more than happy to welcome visitors into their studios and showrooms.
