On the top floor of Tate Modern. There is a nice bar, some low seating and lots of tables and chairs. We were seated quickly. We did not have the famous fish and chips, but the super salad and a special 'duck egg on hash'. Both were good. Great views north across the Thames to the city of London. A... More

Waited for 20 mins to have our order taken (and the place wasn't busy) when the food eventually arrived the chips with the Fish & Chips arrived undercooked. When we eventually attracted the attention of a writer they took the dish away and 15 mins later returned with a fresh dish whilst these chips were cooked they were "tough". I've... More

Stopped for lunch with my daughter after visiting an exhibition. It was very busy although we were able to be seated very quickly. The views of the river and St Pauls Cathedral are great although we were seated in the middle of the restaurant so we didn't get to enjoy them much whilst we ate. The tables are covered with... Restaurant and bar at the Tate Modern. Only wanted a light lunch so we had the squash soup and the leek and potato hash. Both very tasty and satisfying, accompanied by a delicious Scottish Schiehallion beer. Staff very friendly and efficient

After visiting the New&the Tate Modern, we need a break, so we decided to have something light to eat. And the Kitchen&Bar was the place. Two little dishes (carpaccio & a soup) madr our dinner qith two beer. Enough, both tasty, and not expensive. And as a gift, the superb views with the Thames&skyline of London at night. Difficult to... More

We chose this restaurant for it's views straight across the Thames to St Pauls - and in that respect we were not disappointed. We sat by the front windows and soaked in the panorama below. Our lunch was a reasonable meal of tasty meatballs with salad. The staff were attentive and helpful.

I've written an extensive review of Tate Modern, and included in it our experience with the restaurant. It was perhaps one of the worse customer experiences we've had. The service was slow and inattentive. It took far too long just to receive soup and salad (like forever). The view and seating was really terrible. Do yourself a favor and dine... More

This is not a nice place to eat (very busy and noisy), but the very expensive top level restaurant in the Switch House was closed, only the bar was RUNNING, when we were visiting the new Tate Modern "wing"! The menu was very limited at “Kitchen and bar”, and is similar for lunch and dinner. Even though, a lot of... More

We ate lunch here after spending a few hours at the Tate Modern. The views are great overlooking the Thames and the city. On the opposite side, the view is of the other Tate Modern building. Service was friendly and the food (Chicken Kiev, Beef Pie) was tasty and ample.

I came here around 5 years ago and enjoyed a civilised lunch with my sister looking out over the Thames through the huge windows, so thought I would return with hubby for a similar experience. What a mistake. Children were running around the place screaming, gone was the lovely atmosphere, and we had to shout to hear each other over... More

Staying in Southwark

Neighbourhood Profile
Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.
