I have visited Whitby on many an occasion and always when I have passed the Magpie Cafe the queues have always been ridiculous and on my recent visit to Whitby with guests from Shropshire there were no queues so thought this is an opportunity not to be missed and I advised my guests this is constantly in the press as... We went here mainly as it does gluten free fish and chips, but we were blown away by how good the food is. We both ordered cod and chips (mine gf) with mushy peas and the portions were huge and the food was all fantastic. The gluten free batter was crispy and the fish was delicious. We were seated upstairs... More

Only had Chips & battered sausage & both distinctly average. As title suggests, Chips very poor for such a well renowned establishment & glad i smothered them in a sea of gravy & microwaved battered sausage was gladly accepted by my Border Terrier. Most Chips were binned as Seagulls had a day off due to inclement weather. Living on reputation... More

I have visited the Magpie a few times whilst in Whitby and never had a problem with the place. The staff are friendly and the food is delicious. It isn't the cheapest fish and chip restaurant in the area, probably one of the most expensive in fact, but for the quality of the food it can't really be faulted. There... More

You don't get queues like that if you don't do the best fish and chips around. Because it was so cold we only had to wait around 10 minutes to get in. It is easily the tastiest fish and chip shop I've ever been too. The decor is a little old fashioned but it really doesn't matter does it. Hopefully... More

I visit Whitby often and have always wanted to try the magpie given the rave reviews it receives. Usually there is a huge queue so I've skipped it but last year my other half and I finally took the plunge. The decor inside is very retro, but that fit with the overall feel. I was surprised by the very reasonable... More

I love this place, I live near London but would go to Whitby for a weekend visit just to eat here, seafood is my favourite and in my opinion the magpie do the best seafood meals, especially anything that's a bit special. The choice is outstanding, and I love the fact that you can pick and mix some fishes, great... More

I don't eat fish and chips very often these days. So when I do I expect quality food and good choice! I got both at The Magpie. Super Haddock cooked with the skin in a light crispy batter, hand cut chips and tasty mushy peas. My son said they were the best chips he had eaten. The portion was almost... More
