Went along here today for the first time. Friendly and attentive staff. Restaurant very clean. Starters are good, main courses are varied and good. Good wine menu too. Nicely presented lunch. We had a plain and light lunch. Plenty of it, I couldn't eat all of mine. Definitely a nice place. Outside seating. This pub is on the edge of... More

Late in the afternoon, with the National Trust alternatives already closed, we were very glad to find The Red Lion open - and readily took up their special offer of Coffee and Cake. Friendly Service.

What a shame! We thought we'd give it one more try after disappointing meals previously, but if anything it's a whole lot worse. Beautiful setting, lovely atmosphere, lovely staff, lovely warm welcome, but the food was dreadful. Chicken Caesar Salad, so simple, but a whole, apparently unwashed, Little Gem lettuce arranged around the dish, with a dollop of almost inedible... More

A big pub in this touristy village. Nice decor and more atmosphere than you would expect. Menu is good and reasonably priced. We had beef and ale pie and fish and chips. The pie was nice, with good pastry, a decent variety of veg and plenty of gravy. The fish and chips came off the weekday saver menu and was... More

This pub, in a prime location in Avebury, clearly does not rely on repeat custom and therefore does not try to provide good food. Fish was dry and tasteless, rissotto was just rice and peas(!), chips were dry and clearly re-heated, veggie burger not nice either. If in Avebury visiting the sights, I would recommend finding somewhere else until this... More

Right in the middle of the Avebury Stones this is a great place to rest your weary feet. Very good food but if you are giving to have a meal then take something to keep the kids amused while you wait for your meal. Good varied menus, also children's menu

The Red Lion is in a perfect location to take a break from looking at the henges around Avebury. It was late afternoon, and we were ready for food and drink. We caught them just in time before the kitchen closed. Our group of 6 adults, teens, and children enjoyed everything we ordered: fish & chips, cheeseburgers, spotted dick, etc.... More

We received some bad news and decided to cheer ourselves up by going out to tea. The food and service were fantastic. We already love the location of this pub - it is near where we live and in the middle of the Avebury stone circle. We would thoroughly recommend this reasonably priced pub grub!

Thank H H

The Red Lion is set in the tiny village of Avebury which is three miles in radius and some 2000 years older than Stonehenge! Refurbished Winter 2013 the pub is 400 years old and located at the centre of the stone circle where every six weeks a pagan festival is held. It is in the Top Ten list of most haunted pubs in the country and has been seen on TV as such. The main ghost is that of an old landlady "Florrie" who was killed here by her husband. Ghosts aside, this destination food house is a lovely thatched listed cottage with cobbles and a large mill stone in the car park and low ceilings, beams and traditional wood furniture with a modern twist inside. Food is served from an extensive main menu and specials board, offering a good selection of quality pub fayre with a good range of wines available to complement the experience or a choice of real ales if preferred. The Wadworth brewery is only two miles away! Our clientele are generally tourists and visitors but there is a friendly welcome for anyway wishing to have a drink or dine.
