Built as a pub back in 1861 by a wealthy farmer, this interesting building has seen life go by on this reasonably quiet back road, not far from Abergavenny, and stood the test of time. We were greeted with a glass of Prosecco and menus....More

We went for lunch. We were told it was worth the trip. The building is curious, the location not obvious. The room is also a bit scruffy. Apart from the room, I was told by a restaurateur years ago, there are two other things that...More

Ticks all my boxes: delicious food, superb presentation, relaxed — lo-fi? — atmosphere, unobtrusive service and nestled in the pretty Monmouthshire countryside. The elderflower soufflé is my favourite desert bar none, even thinking back to restaurants recommend by the Tyre Company.

Lovely ambience helped along by a relaxed but knowledgeable Kate in the front of house. Excellent service throughout. Highly recommended nettle risotto. The scallops were good, but I found myself adding salt and pepper, something I don't usually need to do and I never add...More

Treated to a birthday meal here by my other half. Booked on open table and the note we added regarding an allergy hadn't made it's way to them. Front of house didn't blink at this though and I was presented with a vegetarian menu and...More

After reading the reviews for this restaurant, we decided to give it a try. From the moment you enter to the time you leave, you are looked after very well. We opted for the seven course taster menu. What a delight, superb dishes, served with...More

We went to Restaurant 1861 for my girlfriend's birthday. Said birthday was a passing comment whilst booking, but on arrival it was clear that the front of house were fully aware of the purpose for our visit, and gave the warmest welcome (and were fantastic...More

Well the good news is that the front of house staff are delightful. However.....perhaps before our visit pre summer season work had been underway, but why that meant putting varnish on tables with a palette knife rather a brush is a puzzle, certainly got it...More
