We visited Rafaels on a Friday night and had a lovely evening! The restaurant itself is cosy and comfortable with a very warm atmosphere. The menu was so diverse we all had trouble choosing - everything sounded fantastic! The food was delicious, and the waitresses very friendly and welcoming. Rafael is very attentive and genuinely cares about pleasing his guests.... More

Had dinner at Rafaels with my partner on a busy Friday night. This basement restaurant was full. Staff were lovely, chatty but professional. Food was ok,wine was fine, nothing special, would I return, no, been there, tried it, won't be back, perfectly fine, but there are so many good restaurants to try in Edinburgh.

From the moment we walked into this small cosy restaurant we were made to feel at home. The wait staff were friendly and helpful explaining the menu. The food was very well presented and delicious, both starters and mains. I would highly recommend Rafael's restaurant, we had a great evening and we plan to return.

Visited sat 26th Nov for a surprise birthday treat. From the moment we walked in nothing was too much trouble. The staff were very helpful explaining the menu item by item. All meals, including starters, were spot on. Beautifully prepared & presented. Their booking system meant that the restaurant only filled up slowly allowing them to spend time with each... More

This is a cosy, stylish restaurant with fabulous food, prepared with passion and beautifully presented. Wide choice on the menu, excellent food, attentive service, and extremely good value. Décor provides a lovely ambience. You will never be hurried as owner serves dinner from 6pm and once you have booked your table, it is yours until closing if you wish. Fabulous... More

The food was amazing - and the atmosphere was nice. It is best to book ahead. We were lucky - the last couple to be seated without a reservation.

Our shuttle driver recommended Rafael's on our way to our hotel. What a great little place to eat. I was there in May and the fireplace was up and running, which added to the atmosphere. The desserts are to die for. Staff was very, very friendly and provided some additional places for us to explore.

Lovely cosy, small restaurant offering good quality Spanish influenced cooking at a decent price. What's not to like?! Seafood starter was superb and my colleagues all voted the chorizo and bean stew as excellent. Chicken, steak and sea bass mains all got rave reviews. Was probably less impressed by the tarte tatin which could have benefitted from being warm and... More

We stumbled upon Rafael's restaurant and ended up enjoying a truly fantastic dining experience. It's a cozy, romantic and warm spot with wonderful personal touches (I've never had an entire menu read to me and presented at the table on a sign). The food was just wonderful - top quality. Every single thing we had was fantastic. And Rafael came... More

Staying in Stockbridge & Dean Village

Neighbourhood Profile
Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
