Had an impromptu meal here with colleagues. All were very impressed by the food - I had Partridge which was excellent. The owner (I think) served us and explained that he selects the wines himself. The 2 we had were both excellent and good value. Particularly liked the fact they kept our water glasses filled all the time rather than... More

I have been here for a birthday party and I really enjoyed the evening. The food was nice, well cooked and nicely presented, thus nothing memorable. The service is what made the difference: the waiter suggested me one of the best Zinfandel I have ever drank and the owner entertained us with a lovely wine-themed wine trivia. He's really passionate... More

My family and I were hopeful that we would have an authentic and delicious Thanksgiving meal. The menu provided did not describe the dishes accurately whatsoever. I provided an image of the "braised turkey" which appeared more like canned cat food, and was accompanied by a teaspoon of cranberry sauce, a strange tomato sauce, and no pumpkin grits in sight.... Yet another restaurant that offers the typical so called locally-sourced gastro-delights that nowdays most of the Edinburgh restaurants/pubs offer. I would describe the food average at its best; don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad --but it was literally something that the following day would not even remember. As far as the "Californian" title is concerned.. well, I am not... More

My husband and I went for dinner last weekend, and have been several times before as the food has been very tasty. However on the last two visits we paid to ungrade the set menu offer to include a steak. Last visit, mine was cooked well but my husbands was poorly cooked, very chewy and mostly inedible. We put this... More

We had a 40 minute wine tasting with the witty and informative Alistair, and then an amazing three course meal all for the exceptional price of £34. Overall it was a marvellous evening, we will be back again very soon.

This restaurant was recommended by friends that visit for the Fringe We called in for an October Monday evening 19 .30 start. A party of 6 was leaving and no one else turned up so it lacked some atmosphere The food was good and it was reasonable value. The restaurant specialises in Californian wines

I have visited this restaurant several times for lunch and dinner and it is consistently excellent. The food is interesting and flavoursome with good quality ingredients, a good range of menu choices, never too heavy but always satisfying and even deserts, which are often a stodgy afterthought, are always interesting. Wines, mostly Californian, are unusual and complement the food perfectly.... More

I've lived in Edinburgh for years but didn't know about Calistoga - mainly because, even though it's in the centre of town, it's hidden away up a cobbled lane off Rose Street. But what a discovery! The food was excellent, all fresh and cooked to order, not too light, not too heavy - and very reasonably priced too. The waitress... More

Visited Calistoga last weekend as a very last minute decision with some friends. Everywhere we had originally wanted to go was busy, and we came across this place on line and thought we would give it a try.The restaurant itself is hidden right down a lane but once inside we were greeted warmly by a very nice member of staff... Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
