The Royal Mile is probably one of the most touristy stretches anywhere in the world (and I live in Amsterdam). However, as we were both tired and had a grumbly 7 year old, we decided to give the Deacon a try as its... More

had scrambled eggs here for £2.70. Great value for money. Staff are friendly and food arrived quickly. It's situated down an alley way lit by fairy lights. Lovely place.

Stumbled upon this little gem whilst looking for breakfast. Came across them as they just opened so we didn't mind waiting for food. Everyone that came in after us (as well as us) the stuff we're very welcoming. I personally need to know their scone recipe because it was just amazing. So fluffy on the inside and a slight crunch... Just up from the RBS building on the left hand side of the Royal Mile this place is a little gem. We went to this cafe yesterday lunchtime and we're not disappointed. We received a warm welcome and had a choice of tables to sit at. After perusing the menu we ordered our sandwiches, scones and drinks at a counter... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
