Although not the menu we had anticipated we had a good value 3 course Christmas meal and the veal was absolutely perfectly cooked! Delicious! The staff were lovely and so helpful! Only critique is that we only had the table for an hour and a half despite booking well in advance and felt a little rushed out of the door... More

The menu pulled us in but the food did not match up to its descriptions. The prices set made me expect good food but this was not the case. It was sadly dull and disappointing

Well, the menu always looks quite good when you read it - and yes know it was a lunch menu and service - but sadly very disappointing food wise and service. Just kind of had a feeling that they couldnt really be bothered with us. So booked and had a party of five - four of us ordered gin and... More

I had no idea what Haggis was, but I was told it was very traditional in Scotland, so I asked my concierge for the best Haggis off the Royal Mile and he recommended Howie's. We tried a few menu items recommended by our waitress and they were all delicious. I was a little weary about trying the Haggis, but dove... More

Dined on a Saturday evening, 4 covers, which allowed us to taste a good cross-section of the menu. Simply put, every dish was excellent. The ambience in the restaurant was fantastic with that 'buzz' that you always hope for that says diners are enjoying. Our server, Carolina (apologies if misspelt) was excellent. Professional, knowledgeable and unobtrusive - exactly the type... More

My husband and I wanted a nice evening out while on vacation and while we love pub food we were wanting something more substantial. We showed up before the dinner rush and they were kind enough to seat us even though we didn't have a reservation. We ordered the mussels for a starter and it was so amazing and delicious!... More

Visited with my wife whilst visiting Edinburgh for the weekend. The staff are pleasant and thankfully squeezed us in after initially indicating an hours wait. the food was good ,i had a Lamb dish, but the portions considering the price are more than disappointing. This place obviously rely on visitors as i doubt anyone returns.

We were lucky to get a table for 6 for lunch on a weekend. We went here on the recommendation of a friend and were not disappointed. Everything we had was beautifully presented and tasty, but in particular we thoroughly enjoyed the Cullen skink, fish of the day, charred pumpkin and the lamb. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, and... More

Came here for a celebration with 37 others. Everything organised beautifully having pre ordered all the choices. Food was excellent quality and service very good with friendly staff. Great for a couple or a group.

A very nice surprise is hiding behind those relatively inconspicuous doors. There was very nice and knowledgeable staff (our waiter was mainly Sarah/Zara). The duck I chose was absolutely delicious and the wine recommended to go with it, complemented it well. My dessert was also tasty, although one my of my companions complained that the caramelized sugar on hers was... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
