I work very close to On The Roll, it's a great wee spot for a quick lunchtime snack. The service is always wonderful and it's definitely great value for money!

Visited "On The Roll" at the Kelburn Garden Party nr Largs although they are normally located in George Square in Edinburgh. Bratwurst in a roll with all the trimmings plus a choice of sauces. XL for £4 - what is not to like. I am a fan of the German sausage so was instantly drawn to their stall and they... More

Very tasty Bratwurst from some very cool guys at this food truck. I like On the Roll a lot. The sausages are very tasty, portion sizes pretty good, and prices not exorbitant. You can get sauce and sauerkraut as well, all in all adding up to a nice lunch in the centre of the student area. They have a loyalty... More

That is proper German food! It's not the widest selection but therefore it is authentic and good quality food. All you need. Definitely a must see for all Edinburgh tourists and German food lovers! Additional plus: The guys are just awesome! So go and get No. 1 Bratwurst(sausage) in town.

I can attest that the people grilling the Bratwurst are from Teutonia, at least the ones at George Square. Except for some limitations, they serve pretty much what you would get in any town in Germany. The bratwurst itself is OK, and it is well-prepared. The bread is definitely not authentic, as it is the typically British mushy roll for... More

I have purchased an authentic German bratwurst many times from the 'On The Roll' wagon at George Square. I have seen a few different people running it, always friendly and happy to serve. The bratwurst comes in three sizes: regular, XL & XXL, all very reasonably priced with an option of many toppings/sauces to go with it. Close to The... More

Have often bought a bratwurst at the stall on the corner of George Square. Always tasty and the staff are really friendly and chatty. Well worth a visit - on a nice day one could also buy a coffee at the adjacent 'police box' and sit in the gardens to enjoy lunch.

I have lunch here on an almost weekly basis and, for what it is, it can't be faulted. For £3.50 you get an XL sausage in a roll with choice of sauerkraut, fried onion, sauce, mustard or ketchup (all all of the above!) and they usually have a couple other options too. The staff are lovely and friendly and the... More

I decided to treat my daughter to a Bratwurst, and she said that it was Fantastic Only thing lacking is the German beer to go with it or a nice coll glass of lemonade. The service was excellent and the standard of hygiene was excellent, It was so good that they so;d out at the Leith Festival,

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
