The restaurant is really nicely decorated and the waitress very kind. However the tables are far too close for a ramantic dinner. Plus they have zero idea what Italian kitchen looks like. As a starter we had bruschettes. The bread was dry with lot of pieces of tomatoes but no taste of bruschettes. Then we had seafood tagliatlle. My God...... More

We found Brown's surprisingly reasonable, given the beautiful building and good food. Wait staff were attentive and helpful, the sticky toffee pudding is an exemplar of it's type and the wine list was very good too.

I visited Browns with some family members mid week one evening. We chose to eat from the early bird menu as the main menu looked a little pricey. I ordered the butternut squash soup which was delicious although a little on the cool side and had a steak for the main course. The service was swift and the food to... More

The fish pie with salmon and scallops was so good! A good hearty serving too. The atmosphere was relaxed and service was fantastic. The only reason why I don't give five stars is because I was sad when my chocolate fondant didn't ooze when I cut into it. Would definitely return.

Visited with friends very busy but they still managed to fit 4 of us in. Afternoon tea was nice we ordered 2 between 4 of us which was sufficient as we hate ate lunch earlier in the day, coffee was a little on the cool side maybe the milk added to the latte wasn't warm but never mind food made... Second time here and still not the best when Edinburgh can offer so many other great places to eat. The one in Glasgow is the same. Service wasn't efficient or particularly friendly. Menu choice was OK but could be more varied. No specials offered to us. They automatically add 10%to the bill without asking even where it was just two... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
