Came here with the other half on Wednesday night for a meal before we headed to the Playhouse to see Jack Whitehall. Didn't know what to expect as we'd never been but we knew they did steak and the pictures looked awesome and that was all we needed to know. We opted for the nachos as a starter with chilli... More

My title says it all really, we stayed at the Ballantrae on Albany street and found Smoke Stack - querky looking but a very attractive menu. Ventured in and was seated by very friendly staff, looked at the menu in more detail and went for the Steak Sandwich - perfectly big portion, steak cooked to perfection (medium/pink) and incredibly tasty!... We stumbled across this restaurant when looking for somewhere to eat near the stand comedy club. Friendly staff and lovely food , would highly recommend the ribs and had the biggest bit of cheesecake!

We dropped in on way to theatre and it was the 1st time I had ever tasted a taco which was a smoked beef taco on special board and then Eton mess cheesecake after, both absolutely delicious and very friendly staff

We decided to go for dinner to this place, as it was in very close proximity to the Edinburgh Playhouse, and we are glad we did. The food was outstanding, the waiting staff couldn't be more helpful and the prices were very reasonable for Edinburgh. Will definitely visit this place again, and would highly recommend.

Thanks for the review - as you say we are just 2 minutes walk from the Playhouse or the Vue cinema at Omni centre. Perfect for before or after a show/film More

I was seated in the front window, at a tiny table squeezed into a tiny nook. The table had been set for two but there is no way two people could eat at the table comfortably. The waitress then barked at me midway through my order interrupting me about specifying what burger I would like, then rudely leaned across me... More

Gordon - really sorry to hear you had a bad experience, as the vast majority of our reviews demonstrate this is very unusual. We don't book the table in the window - it is for walk ins only - some people want to sit there when the restaurant is empty but others don't like it all. It's a bit of... More

Fabulous food and amazing service. Popped in for lunch with some old friends and was greeted by lovely staff and a delicious cocktail. Starter was yummy and our fillet steak was amazing. Close to the train station, the Smokestack is the perfect place to escape the crowds and go for a delicious meal. Big shout out to Viola for being... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
