My wife and I had afternoon tea at the Forth floor restaurant. It was a bit odd to me that there weren't sandwiches In the selection and I felt they could mix it up a bit better as there were too many cakes. Service was excellent but I have a particular gripe with the "discretionary" service charge that is automatically... More

Lucky friend who lives here booked this restaurant for our bi-annual reunion. What an excellent choice! Fine location for short walk from Edinburgh Waverley station and bright, airy outlook over St Andrews Gardens. We had possibly best table in restaurant in corner beside windows 2 course menu was good value with interesting choices which gave something for most tastes. We... More

Dinner for 7 to celebrate a 21st birthday. Very varied menu with a set price for 1,2 or 3 courses. Beautifully presented, imaginative food. Service was excellent and the view early evening over Edinburgh Castle and St Andrews Square in the sunshine was spectacular. Enjoyable evening and buzzy atmosphere

Great food made even better by our server Marta, she was great. Very polite and attentive when other servers just walked past. 10/10,

Went with my little niece and her friend. They both enjoyed it. Slight queue for a seat, once seated there was quite a wait for a seat. This was a Saturday so be prepared for a short wait. Also bring plenty money as it's quite pricey.

My friend and I visited today for a birthday afternoon tea and we were disappointed. Everything was "nice" which is not what one expects from a store such as this. Most unusually, there were no sandwiches on offer! The scone plate was disappointingly sparse. Two scones with a small jar of jam and the same of cream to share. The... More

Beautiful brunch on a rare warm day in Edinburgh. What a great way to start a Sunday! The waffles with Nutella & whipped cream had a positive affect on the kids. Freshly cooked (not preheated, and if they were you couldn't tell) with the only complaint being not enough Nutella (personally I thought there was adequate). Eggs Benedict with salmon... More

We were exhausted after returning rental car at Waverly Station and walking what seemed like miles through the station and a few blocks to St. Andrew Square. I spotted Harvey Nichols and remembered reading good things about the Forth Floor. The restaurant was no longer serving lunch, so we ate in the Brasserie. We were lucky with nice weather, and... I love this place! The food is excellent, the service very good and the decor delightful. On a sunny say you can sit outside on their fourth floor balcony and eat al fresco, looking down over St Andrew's Square. The set two course menu at £18 is reasonable for the quality of food and the pleasantness of the location. If... More

I do not check my rewards often but I was glad I did as I had a reward for a free English Garden cocktail so when I was in Edinburgh we popped in for a pre-dinner drink and to claim our free cocktail. As we were just having one we sat at the bar to enjoy our cocktail - which... More

With the scenery of Edinburgh Castle and the Firth of Forth, the Forth Floor Restaurant at Harvey Nichols certainly has a sense of drama about it. The stylish elements of the decor, such as the circular lights which begin to glow red once the sky becomes darker, and the Scottish flavours found through the restaurant menu all inspire an adventurous dining experience with the finest quality food. Meanwhile, the brasserie makes for an enjoyable alternative, presenting a modern take on conventional European cuisine, and the extensive wine list includes over 350 different varieties of wines and champagnes. During the summer months, it is also possible to enjoy meals outside on the large terrace, overlooking all of Edinburgh.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
