We visited Merchants just before Christmas. The menu was extensive and the staff were very attentive. The food was exceptional and we had a lovely evening. Will definitely be returning.

Not quite sure how you order the Duck and lamb arrives for two of our party. The owner who took our order had not the decency to apologise or even come near our table . Basically the food was mediocre and the service atrocious. Avoid unless you like surprises.

Had dinner here on our work Christmas night out. There were around 15 of us for the meal. The menu had enough variety to suit everyone, even the vegetarians. The portion sizes were good so no need for a takeaway on the way home at the end of the night. Good value for money too. Would be interesting to visit... More

Just around the corner from Grassmarket, near Greyfriars Bobby, it is a bit hidden away. Staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and they were genuinely concerned that we enjoyed our meal. Being a pair of fussy eaters, the adjusted the menu offering to suit our taste. I would recommend this restaurant.

Was given a voucher here for a gift and what a lovely gift it turned out to be. It's a bit hidden away in Grassmarket, minutes from Greyfriers Bobby statue but well worth a visit. We had a 3 course meal which was served promptly and well presented. Food was piping hot and delicious. Haggis spring roll is a must.... More

Another decade another geography reunion in Edinburgh. And another visit to Merchants for our dinner. These guys are great. Flexible on numbers(we had some late shows which they took in their stride) , and great service. The wine flowed and we all got fed well too. Even room to spread out and blether afterwards over drinks and coffees.

We were in Edinburgh for the day, having travelled up by train, so were looking for a restaurant within walking distance of Waverley Station. Merchants was recommended as having good disabled access for me in my wheelchair. We booked for the early supper deal, which we could n't fault. Hubby had smoked salmon tower, very substantial, I had classic asparagus... More

There were 2 parties of ~60 people all wanting to eat and be at the castle in time for the tattoo. The food came out in a good time, the portions were generous and tasty. I surprised them by saying I was vegan and it didn't phase them. All good.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
