Redeeming a gift voucher, we wondered why on Earth we hadn't been here before. You expect basements to be dark and closed in. This was anything but. I think we ate starters of pigeon and smoked haddock risotto, and mains of halibut and lamb. We...More

Cosy restaurant in the basement. Great tasting menu. I had scallops for a first course and duck leg for a second course, both gluten free and divine. My husband had a venison terrine and halibut, also great. Did not have room for dessert. Perfect start...More

Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling
a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s
small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s
first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s
most desirable, though many bohemian touches have
fallen away as its residents have matured and the area
has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but
mostly residents display refined tastes in basement

I assume you have already been here, but for future reference for other people I would say to dress smart-casual (on the smarter side but not a suit!)

Up and coming chef Jason Gallagher has done a fine job in turning the former haunt of local 'celebrity' chef Juliet Lawrence Wilson into a luxurious showcase of his own exciting style of Modern European cuisine. The basement space really is a lovely little restaurant for a romantic meal or special occasion. Black-painted walls decorated with modern art work well with plush golden upholstered chairs, thick white table linen and fairy lights to create an especially intimate atmosphere. Gallagher works with fresh, seasonal ingredients so the menu often changes, but the offerings are guaranteed to be indulgent and of the kind that feel like they're a real treat to be eating. Perfect service too.
