Partner and I split a Steak and Ale pie, tasty enough, although crust was not nearly done enough for our liking. Service was great and prices reasonable.

We had their sausages and mash which were very tasty. The sausages all had different flavours and the potatoes were flavourful with a good texture. The other people I was with had the venison stew/pie and it was well received. The show stopper was the treacle and date pudding. It is the best seller for good reason. To top it... More

This place was recommended by our tour guide, as we asked him for a students budget-friendly place for lunch. And indeed it was. The menu offers what the restaurant promises: home-like food. Nothing extravagant and therefore fair prices (for Edinburgh). We ordered Haggis and were nicely surprised! Although a little bit to peppery for my taste, I found this often... More

Yum - Mum's is a hit! Great comfort food regardless of where you come from. The queue to get in can be lengthy. Arrive early so you can get a table quickly. The menu is affordable and full of traditional fare and there is a good selection of beverages. The servings are large so be aware.

For great comfort food at a decent price this is the place to go. We went twice as the first time we were too full to have dessert. Good vegetarian options. Be forewarned it gets very busy during lunchtime and it's not a large space.

I ordered eggs benedict and a small bottle of still water. The eggs benedict tasted fine, but the muffin had gotten quite soggy on the bottoms because the plate sat on the waiting counter for five minutes. The waiting counter had no heat lamp, so by the time the plate arrived, my food was lukewarm. The service was decent, but... More

Had the sausages and champ mash. It was beautiful proper comfort food and great staff however not a very big place and extremely busy so may have to wait or book and come back later but definitely worth it.

Mums was recommended by a friend and after a night of drinking whisky, this was what was needed the next day! Staff were really friendly too :)

We had a lovely breakfast this morning at Mum's. We both ordered a classic breakfast each and had pancakes with syrup to share. The breakfast was delicious - couldn't fault it at all. The pancakes were definitely the best pancakes I've had, very fluffy. Also thoroughly enjoyed my latte. Overall lovely meal, and the staff were very pleasant and friendly.... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
