I think this is a superb little restaurant. The staff could not have been more polite, friendly & professional and the food was very good. Reasonably priced and very tasty. I had the Pig Cheek and Monkfish - both superbly presented and tasty. My wife had the Ricotta starter & the Pork Belly - both delicious. With an ok bottle... More

We're surprised Iris doesn't rank higher on TA, as it was at least as good as other higher rated restaurants we visited during our week in Edinburgh. The warm partridge salad, followed by pork main were delicious with great attention to maximising flavour. Really enjoyable. Sticky toffee pudding and the chocolate and beetroot cake were equally impressive. Service was friendly... More

We were on a weekend visit to Edinburgh and this restaurant was suggested as being well worth a visit. This turned out to be one of the best restaurants we had the good luck to book, the service and food was well above expectations and we would definitely recommend that this establishment is place on the must go to list.

Would recommend the fish courses of King prawn starter and Salmon fillet. A meal with a lovely bottle of the Pint Grigio with Edinburgh Gin.

We visited on Saturday night and had the best meal of the long weekend we were there! Even though we didn't have a booking the staff fitted us in. My partner had the pheasant and said it was one of the best meals he's ever had! My salmon was so tender it melted in my mouth! Service and food was... More

We stumbled across this on Saturday night, on a weekend away in Edinburgh. Having eaten at The Witchery the night before and being hugely underwhelmed, I cannot speak highly enough of this place. We didn't have a reservation and just rocked up and were seated immediately. The food was excellent, lovely wine, brilliant staff. Had the Scallops, followed by Pheasant... More

I am a regular here and am always impressed. It sets the standard for me to benchmark other places. Always a varied and interesting menu with usually enough choice for everyone. Great environment and attentive staff

Last time we visited Edinburgh we had an enjoyable evening in this intimate, contemporary and comfortable restaurant. It impressed us so much that we decided to make a return visit and we were not disappointed. As visitors to the city we were delighted to introduce Iris to a family member who lives in Edinburgh but had never dined there. They... More

Phenomenal food. Rather unfortunate if you go on a Sunday in January as we were the only people in the restaurant!! However they dealt with the situation brilliantly. Still felt really welcome and would definitely return on another evening. Even if we were the only people.!!

Description
Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
