I must confess, after eating all over the world I am a self confessed “foodie”. My quest to find a half decent place to eat near to Doncaster usually ends in disappointment. Most pubs in our area are unfriendly and serve bland, grey, tasteless food. We travel from our Bawtry home for many miles in our quest to find decent pub food!
However, I am thrilled to say that the King William is an oasis in a desert of the mundane. The place is full if character and very welcoming. The bar staff and management are always friendly and welcoming. After a short while they recognise you from previous visits and remember your favourite tipple! A good selection of larger and hand pulled bitter are always on tap. The selection of wines by the bottle and glass is also more than adequate.
The menu has developed over the last couple of years and is a credit to the chiefs. A wide range of fresh local produce goes into the dishes! Pub food, often with a pleasant twist. Sunday lunch is a delight!
Having frequented this pub on a weekly basis for the past couple of years, we never tire of the food. Menus change almost daily with a new addition of lunch options.
Having had a last minute cancellation of a new years eve party that we should have been attending, we chanced our luck and managed to book a table for 2. 4 courses on offer for just £35 each + 2 live singers and a magician. Well we had a ball! Canopies and sparkling wine on the house all served at the table. The food was its usual excellent standard. The singer’s and magician were amazing!
Give the place a try, you won’t be disappointed!

Arrived for lunch today and found the welcome warm and welcoming. The food was slow to arrive so we left without ordering pudding or hot drinks. Overall the kitchen needs to be ready for service, once that is right it will be great.

Had a table booked for 20:15 Saturday night, got there 30mins early for a drink in the bar, a table was available so we got seated straight away.
Service was fast, and all the staff were very informative, friendly and helpful.
A great selection of drinks, especially if you like a decent real ale 👌🏼
The food was brilliant, homemade scotch egg starter in curry sauce, followed by braised ox cheek, banana custard with a twist to finish.
Couldn’t fault anything and am looking forward to my next visit.
If you’re around the area you should definitely give it a try.

Initially I do have to say the food was very good, well cooked and presented.
But several of us found the portion size of the Hake meal very questionable, a piece of fish 3'' X 2'' is not a portion and the argument put forward by the head waiter that it was quite thick and the butter used and ingredients didnt go down very well it was paltry. Although he did redeem himself by offering another portion which arrived twice the size as previous and the guest said was a lot better than the first. Goes without saying get it right first time. The fish and chips is excellent. The wife had two small scoops of ice cream for her pudding which said was very nice, but cannot understand why two small scoops of ice cream can be dearer than an actual full pudding I think they had our leg up with that one. I would say a little expensive and with the cheeky surcharge of 10% questionable. Overall worth a visit but question the portion size if not happy! Staff were very friendly and helpful.

We frequent the King William often with our 4 legged friends and always receive the best service and great food. New Years Eve was just an amazing evening. The food was exceptional and fantastic value. Tom, Kirsty and the other bar staff worked so hard to make it a great evening. We enjoyed the live music and the magician was so entertaining, I could have watched him all night. Although the pub is a few miles from home, we still class it as our local. Always a great welcoming whenever we visit. Heres to a great 2020. Thanks again for a wonderful evening.

Met my sister and brother for what we hoped a super Sunday lunch our monthly meet up and chat, no mind we parked in an extremely muddy field and had to wash our shoes on arrival.
We are not local on the doorstep here and like to try different places, this is a pub, the Sunday lunch at £17.95 is not a pub Carvery price, but my how we regretted not finding one in the area.
My brother had pork which was acceptable, my sister and I had beef and thus our lunch ended disastrously.
I added cauliflower cheese my favourite at £4.50 …. Was definitely al dente and the cheese sauce lacked flavour and depth ….very thin and watery.
The beef I’m sorry to say in the words of Yorkshire folk … a good vet could have brought back to life , it was raw not rare ..raw and very fatty.
My sister didn’t want to make a fuss , I complained but she shrugged it off and said she would take it home for the dogs. However, I could not eat raw meat and asked for a plate to remove it from mine, the lovely waiter said he would have it cooked a little more and took it away , really, by which time I had eaten my vegetables. The meat came back really just as sent raw, the waitress wrapped up both servings and it was taken home for the dogs. All in all a very expensive veg course.
No apology no removal from our bill, poor customer service.
We left, I thought my sister had jokingly said she was going to the supermarket to buy something for tea!
I was shocked to see her turn into Sainsbury’s in Bawtry to shop!
I’d like say we will return and try again, but sadly not, next month it’s my turn to host and it won’t be at the King William!
Truly disappointed, this review is not given lightly, perhaps we went on an off day. Looking at other diners Sunday lunch I do think we were in the minority, in fact the table beside us looked to have beef that was cooked!
However that does not detract for my genuine feelings of being under valued as a customer.

We haven’t been to the King William for a while & I’m afraid we won’t be going back!!
The new spring menu was very limited & grossly overpriced, starters at £14.95 a joke & a bowl of cabbage & carrots £5!! The food was basic, not worth the price tag. All customers were crammed into the really small seating area when there is a more spacious room at the back of the pub!! Not very conducive to covid concerns everyone seated so close together in such a very small warm room!! Why couldn’t customers be spaced out more??
The service was good & staff pleasant, but we were the last customers in the premises at 9pm & felt like they wanted us to leave. Staff kept looking over & even blew out the candles on all the other tables so was obvious they wanted us to leave!! Our table was for 8pm on a Saturday night & we left by 9.15 after paying a £180 bill!! No atmosphere at all, even the bar area was empty, it just felt rushed & as though they wanted to close up.
Very disappointing & expensive visit.

Hello Deborah,
Firstly may I apologise for your experience. The new ‘spring menu’ is a small, transient menu as we are encountering staffing issues in the kitchen which we are on the way to having sorted.
We are awaiting some new staff who are currently working notice.
We do have a range of items in terms of price, and a 14.95 option has been on our menu for years. Unfortunately the price of food is skyrocketing at the moment, and there is little that we can do about that.
Our new full spring/ summer menu which launches in the next week or so has a fab range of around 14 starters, from 5.95 all the way to scallops at 14.95.
With regard to table spacing, there are no current guidelines that suggest how far tables should be spaced, and our tables have been spaced in this way for 8 years. Should you have wanted to sit in the restaurant, we would honour your request, but when we have enough tables in one room, we like to have people together so that the atmosphere is more vibrant and conducive of our busy country pub.
That being said, the way that the candles were blown out and you were made to feel like that is totally unacceptable.
We have called a meeting with the manager in question this morning as we have had some similar comments, and he has left us with immediate effect.
I would like to assure you that while we do experience staffing issues (things have been really tough and short in the industry since covid) we have our finger on the pulse and are working hard to resolve teething problems that we experience.
I would like to thank you for your feedback, as without it, we cannot improve and grow, and I hope that you can give us another chance to show you what we are about.
Keep an eye on Facebook for the new menu launch, and then come and see us.
Kindest Regards
Joe

This place is becoming a victim of it’s own success and is in danger of losing what made it so good in the first place. We’ve eaten here many times over the years and understandably have had a variety of different service experiences but always on the right side of positive. Tonight’s experience was simply awful. Forgotten drink orders, terribly slow service, no attention from the staff and no ability to serve even a limited food menu. You really need to get your act together King William.....we won’t be back until you do!

We have been visiting the king William for years! Visiting at least once a month and used to be every Friday night until our youngest was born.
The service used to be spot on and food perfect! Always beautiful and hot.
When booking through their online booking site they automatically send a guest feedback request form. After our last visit I replied as I received awful service and the food was poor and not up to its usual standard. As a business owner I would appreciate feedback like this as I want to grow my business abs take any feedback to improve where needed.
However, I never received a reply or an apology whatsoever. I then sent a message on Instagram incase my feedback was missed. Still no response. So here I am. On trip advisor.
last Sunday was awful! The service was so poor! No customer service at all! Not pleasant like usual. No one made any recommendations on menu like usual. Normally the manager offers the menu talks about it and makes recommendations. This time just handed the menu and walked off.
I had to ask twice for a high chair. We put this on the booking and normally this is there when we arrive. Which is so helpful when trying to entertain a 2 years old and 4 years old.
No one asked if our meal was ok at any point whilst clearing plates, whilst Giving us our bill or whilst we paid bill the bill and they even now put a standard service charge on the bill which I thought about asking to be removed as the service was non existent on this occasion. Never offered more drinks like usual. This is a fantastic time to make more profit and seems to be non existent now to offer more drinks. Where is the owner! Surely offering more drinks when glasses are empty is just basic!
Never saw manager. Tasteless meals. Cauliflower cheese was like water and no taste of truffle when we ordered the truffle bacon cauliflower cheese awful. Normally absolutely love this and we don’t mind paying the £6.50 or so for this which is very expensive compared to other restaurants but it’s got to be done right. This time it tasted like watery cauliflower. The meat was tasty as always but the gravy was like water. The mashed potato was tasteless and the roast potatoes not cooked enough. So so disappointing.
After so many years of coming a response would have been nice.
I very much doubt we will return after our most recent experience and not not hAving received an apology.

Looking at previous reviews thought we had a dead cert with our booking. Lovely welcome and prompt drinks order taken and menus offered. My husband has the chef’s special which wasn’t. I had fish and chips. Hubby’s fish was well cooked but veggies and sauce lacking and we would expect better for £26 main in a pub. My fish was good but chips were really roasties so disappointed. Ham hock in the peas was dry. Nice place, over priced.

Had a lovely evening despite the rain. Wonderful atmosphere and staff very pleasant. Fish and chips plus the steak and ale pie were good and great value but the chicken supreme at £19 was extremely disappointing as only the size of a starter! It was very tasty but so small. To be classed as a main course it needed to be doubled in size! We will return as the atmosphere was so good and the huge heaters meant you didn’t have to sit in your coat! I would have given 4/5 if it wasn’t for the tiny and over priced chicken meal

Well after a short visit to here after a local walk. We were so impressed with the service and food that was being served we decided t try it ourselves the following week. We were certainly not dissapointed. Staff were amazing. Engaging with customers and all looked calm in a Very busy enviroment. The Food we had was beautifully cooked and deserts were just as nice. Must mention the young manager/superviser very friendly always attentive to customer needs as were the rest of the obviously proper trained staff. A Lovely Afternoon had by us and a friend. Thankyou.

Decided to round a trip to the wildlife park off with a trip to one of my favourite restaurants.
I was a bit apprehensive- I’d seen on FB that they had converted part of the car park into tables and being stereotypically female, I struggle with my overly large car in small spaces. 😬
no matter though, we prebooked via FB messenger whilst in Lion Country, got parked, we wrangled the toddler and the baby into the pub and ordered two large Rosè. The lovely front of house suggested we share a bottle but I wasn’t sure it would do anything for my reversing skills when it came to operation exit. 🥴
Two chicken Caesar salads and the worlds most enviable toddler nuggets and chippies. I’ve missed this place during lockdown as we were too far for their marvellous take out services but thankfully their chefs obviously kept sharp - food was SO good!
All nice and clean and socially distanced, lots of space, lots of love. Can’t wait to come back again.

Only visited before for the beautiful ice cream served along side the pub. Today we had booked for lunch and it was a lovely sunny day so we sat on the terrace, looking out over the gardens and river beyond. Nice touch was the water they brought was iced and had cucumber strips in. It’s the little things…. Lovely leisurely lunch. I had arancini to start and then steak and ale pie. All was delicious. Finished our meal with a visit to the ice cream parlour next door, The Cow Shack, and sat next to the river to enjoy. Staff all very courteous and welcoming. Really enjoyed our lunch, we will be back with family to enjoy a Sunday lunch soon.

Dog friendly pub with good food and nice atmosphere. Came for lunch and had a mixture of lunch and normal menu. Good choices and all the food was excellent - be aware they do not open until 12 noon and therefore if you arrive beforehand you will be waiting in car park.
