We arrived at 11.40 and asked the staff who were smoking outside if we could come in for a drink but they said they opened at 12pm and so we had to sit outside as they wouldn't let us wait inside. A shame. At 11.50 we asked again if we could come inside and someone else said yes! We had... More

Pretentious attitude and menu, but average food and expensive food. Not really worth it. Good things: its location (convenient if you are visiting the Jardin des Plantes) and friendly to kids.

We visited this for lunch after a visit to the gardens. We both ordered the special which was stuff tomatoes with a mushroom sauce reduction. We thought it was absolutely delicious! Service was very good too.

we went because it is kid friendly. In fact it is. But I would not recommend the restaurant anyway ,since the Food is not really good and overpriced for what you have.

Had lunch at La Baleine after a visit to the Jardin Des Plantes. Pretty, conservatory overlooking the gardens. Very popular with families and lunching ladies. We chose the house specialties of beef tartare and cob salad. Both were very good but too large for lunch. Other items on the menu seemed of a smaller size. Kids menu also available. Service... The meny looks good - on paper, but does not deliver. The service however is the major let down. When our food finally arrived after a good half an hour, it was cold. And the waiter had forgotten our bottle of wine. Neither quality of food or service makes it worth it with several other places nearby.

Our daughter had a kids menu - a drink and a main and she didn't have a dessert (total cost 13.50 Euro for all 3). When I asked to reduce the total bill less the kids dessert, I got even a larger bill for a drink and a kids main separately, totalling 4.50+10=14.50. When confronted, the manager said - you... We had lunch after walking through the botanic garden. It was a pleasant spot under umbrellas with good service from a male waiter who explained the menu and when my wife chose a dish h advised against it because it was very strong. She still chose it and enjoyedit. My chicken salad was very good and I enjoyed what we... More

Staying in Quartier Latin

Neighbourhood Profile
Quartier Latin
The Latin Quarter bursts with intellectual life, architectural splendour and ongoing merriment. The small streets are filled with classical buildings, student bars and lively eateries while the squares are dominated by historic monuments. The area is defined by the 800-year-old Sorbonne University, where Latin once prevailed, and is famous for the Pantheon which celebrates the great men and women of France. During the day students rush from classes to the library and intellectuals people watch from the terraced cafés. As night time falls the surrounding establishments fill up and the merriment really begins. The liveliest parts are around Rue Mouffetard, lined with crêperies and international street food eateries, and Place de la Contrescarpe characterised by terraced brasseries, this neighbourhood provides real nourishment for the mind, belly, and soul.
