Get there midweek before or after the lunch rush, grab a stool and settle in. Just ask the bar/waitress for wine recommendations if you are unsure along with the small plates on offer. The oysters are fresh, the squid with chorizo and scallops are amazing and its great value. If you fancy some meat dishes pop next door (sister restaurant) and order/pay and they will bring it in piping hot. I had the roast belly of pork and hamburger with foie gras. Good fun, buzzing little place with friendly staff. Recommended!

I had read a few poor reviews of this tapas bar and I can't understand their reviews after eating here. I suppose that some American diners, and those used to American dining experiences, mistake French politeness and the custom of not rushing customers as rudeness and being ignored. When you travel, look up the customs and know what to expect. We found the staff here, who spoke English, to be professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. The tapas plates were delicious and we were given perfect pairings of wine from the staff. It is a bit crowded in the space due to the well deserved popularity of L'Avant Comptoir, but we still received great service and enjoyed our experience. This is a top-notch tapas bar and well worth the visit!

This has got to be, our favorite restaurant during our visit in Paris. It's nice and casual, the staff are just superbly friendly and nice, and their tapas were delicious. We went with all seafood with the exception of a couple of dishes (see our photos). We dined in at the Seafood location, but you can go next door and order beef and they will deliver at your table. Great service. This place gets packed and we were here around 7pm and it was full with lines out the door. However, the wait is worth it. PS - menu is located at the ceiling. Just look up :) Cheers!

Last time we visited was October 2019 and raved about this place so had high expectations. The foie gras on a skewer with red pepper was sublime and a must-have disk. As for the rest, it was a disappointment. The bordier butter which I raved about beforehand was a mild low salt imitation that lacked depth of flavour. The yellow cantered bread had an incredible crust and at midday opening was freshly baked and warm but again not one I would want again. Foie gras with cherries unremarkable and chef did not have cherries. Grumpy front of house did not tell us this when we ordered and we had to ask the chef where the cherries were. Fries were soggy. The ox tail tasted delicious on its own but the toasted sandwich was soggy . Not crunchy so no texture and not like gravy-drenched but crunch fried bread under a chateaubriand. I think most likely cooked in butter which will never produce crunchy texture. I highly recommend the foie gras with red peppers. We are foodies but do not drink alcohol and as such were publicly mocked and treated with distain. Paris is changing and in most restaurants we visited this was politely accepted

Had a lovely lunch catching up with an old friend. We didn’t have stools but we had a good spot at the counter. The food is delicious and well prepared. Don’t miss the bread and the enormous slab of butter on the counter- it’s yummy. There is no wine list, but the server is happy to recommend something based on what you like- we were very pleased with his suggestion. It’s a small place and it for sure gets crowded so you have to be patient. I wouldn’t recommend going if you’re in a rush. But the service is fine. I’ve read some of the other reviews and it’s unfortunate people had a bad experience. The person working behind the counter today spoke French, Italian, English. I noticed no difference in the service provided based on the language the customers were speaking.

Great, nice and busy place to eat on the "front counter". Owner and staff were great! They suggested different wines and food. The "bacalao" (cod fish) croquets or ham croquets were awesome. If you are not sure what to eat, you can simply look up at the various cards (photos) hanging from the ceiling of the food they serve, including desserts! Also, just look around at what is being served and try it, you can't go wrong in this place! Oh, and while you are waiting for your food order(s) you must enjoy the fresh warm bread and scrumptiously fresh churned butter, with your wine of course!!

We went to the seafood version (next door to this one) and were not disappointed. The "menu" is arranged as cards hanging from the ceiling with a picture and description. Very few seats but it is the place for a few bites, not a sit down 4 course dinner! Very helpful sommelier who explained things clearly and seemed pleased to share his knowledge with a couple of English tourists. We appeared to be the only non-local people there, which is a good sign and the oyster bar out the front seemed very popular with locals too.

The L'Avant Comptoir concept is something from a dream. Small, intimate, cool wine bar that serves killer wines, bites and has slabs of butter everywhere for you to slather up the incredible bread they serve. Sign me up! We loved every visit we made (I think the total was 4 times in 2 days) while staying in Paris. The staff highlighted by Sylvain and Oscar (DJ Oscar!) picked out amazing wines, food and music. This is the type of joint I wish we had in NYC, and is one that you will want to return day after day! Cheers L'Avant Comptoir!

Excellent wine bar a few meters away from the Odéon metro station. The very good bread is a trademark as well as the small hill of butter on the bar. Ask for it! The wine list is excellent as are the small plates of appetizers that arrive very quickly in front of you. It is value for money option! Highly recommended!

We visited here after seeing the great reviews and it wasn’t far from our hotel. We loved that there were no seats and the menu was on the ceiling. Really enjoyed the food, highly recommend the sausage and fondue Came back on our last night but unfortunately somebody was sick on the floor and there was a group of people who were way too drunk and eventually asked to leave. Shame on our last night as we would have stayed longer.

A great Parisian experince at these two tapas bars. We chose La Mer bar and got two stools at the bar straight away. After four tasting dishes, tap water, and two baskets of freshly sliced bread with liberally amounts of salted butter we were more than satisfied.

Hit both the winebar and then next day the resto next door. The winebar is small and narrow and as long as it isn’t standing room only as it was in a previous visit when we decided to go elsewhere on this occasion seats at the bar were available and the food and wine product immediately demonstrated why the popularity. The follow on lunch the nectar day was just perfect with each dish again demonstrating in loud clarity why this bistrot stands out. Winelist ample with both accessible and trophy choices available though the strength is clearly the food product and the atmo.

We had been feeling this thing coming inexorably for several years (see my previous opinions on this place), and here we are: last night, after having opened six or seven references of red wines “a bottle of strong red if it pleases you”, nothing, absolutely nothing, the nothingness of the essence of wine is in all the glasses: a pink and translucent juice, zero intensity, zero length in the mouth. The totalitarianism of natural wine is killing Tapas, how sad. Disappointed, we order a glass of white wine, which ultimately won't be much better than these poor reds, and we go to dine elsewhere, sad, deeply. So we go to the competitor on rue de Seine, which has at least “normal” wines on its menu, you know wines that are in all wine lovers’ cellars (and obviously on the menu of all good restaurants). Of course we are not the only ones: enormous pressure on the restaurant, waiting list of at least 45 minutes to get a stool and eat tapas, also of quality. I'm angry, really angry. Where are the (organic) Cairannes from Richaud, the Clos Marie wines, why not Les Creisses? All these “real” wines at reasonable prices? There are references in all areas: in gastronomy we have Guy Savoie, Alain Ducasse, Arnaud Donkele and many others but especially for having encountered him at the tapas of Monsieur Camdeborde, Frédéric Anton du Pré Catelan (a member of his team present that evening and to whom I opened up about my problem with natural wines at Tapas told me “yes it’s distressing”, if my voice doesn’t carry, maybe theirs..). In the wine (red to stay in my subject) we have Romanee Conti, Latour, Haut Brion, Petrus…. What do they think of these translucent, pink wines, without depth and without finish which have filled the wine cabinets of Monsieur Camdeborde's Tapas to the point of crowding out all the others? I would conclude with this bitter reflection: how can we imagine that customers leave “Les Tapas” because of the wines? Damn wake up!!

So we went there for drinks with a friend. We sat there for 15 minutes while the waiter went to serve other tables that came after us. I ended up going to see the waiter and before I even said hello, he asked me to sit and wait for him to which I said we were already at a table. He replied « well congrats sir now go and sit ». We ended up leaving. So i guess congrats for the good service.

Outstanding food, tapas style, meaning small portions. There are two different "avant comptoir" next to each other: one specialises in meats, the other one in seafood. Both are excellent and both with very friendly service. The food is fresh and delicious. Seats are at the counter so ideal for solo or couples.
