It was a very cold evening, we were tired after sightseeing all day, so decided to pop into cosy looking Hippopotamus. Restaurant was full of diners which is always a good sign. When we sat down we noticed cutlery missing, one glass was very dirty, I asked the waiter for another glass, he did not apologise and never returned with... More

We chose to do a set menu - reasonably priced at around 15 euros for two courses, and then chose a starter of escargot from outside the set menu. The escargot were tasty. The main and desert were relatively uninspiring but excellent value - particularly the main as it came with a choice of 2 sides, i chose rattatoulie and... More

This is a chain resto but it was delicious. We had different variations of "steak frites" and everything was well done. Service was very slow but overall I would return for another meal.

Ate here tonight. Both had entrecote steak came with baked potato and sour cream and sauce of your choice. Ordered side salad which in France is lettuce. Wine 24e a bottle cheapest so got 2 carafes of Merlot at 17 e much better value. Plenty of bread provided which his nibs scoffed along with complimentary crisps. Don't normally do dessert... More

There are many Hippopotamus restaurants in Paris or probably througout France. Name is unique but food is not so unique, just standard.

They didn't seem to want to give us just drinks but they allowed it and they were all fine. Food looked a bit over priced and what was coming out of the kitchen not so great, that's why we only had drinks and then left...

The food was excellent, as always at Hippotamus. I've been going to other restaurants of this chain for a long time, but this was my first visit to this particular restaurant. And, unlike in other Hippopotamus, here I was disappointed. The waiter did a great job bringing us water all along our dinner, but he forgot about a tea we... More

Positive: Great food. Killer desserts. Pleasant staff. Reasonable prices. Good choice if you're traveling with children. Negative: long wait time.

Staying in Le Marais

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Marais
The Marais is a winding maze of multi-faceted streets that beg to be explored. It bursts with small boutiques, historic buildings, cozy traditional restaurants, and hidden parks. Around each corner, you'll come across little gems of architecture spanning the centuries, from understated medieval towers to classical libraries and 17th century splendour. This neighbourhood unites a rich mix of people of all ages, but it's best known for the gay scene mostly in the south and the Jewish community around Rue des Rosiers.
