We've eaten here a few times and each time enjoyed ourselves, but the food was uneven. If you come during prime dining time, be prepared to get cozy with your neighbors. But that can add to the fun. It tends toward the fast food end of the spectrum, but is only steps away from 3 of the most intriguing movie... More

We visited Brasserie Balzar 10 years ago and we had to come back. While the restaurant looks a bit worn over the years, the food and staff are great. This may look like a typical touristy Parisian brasserie, but it is not. Balzar is frequented by many locals and we saw years ago and during this visit. Some of the... More

When ambience isn’t enough An archetypal Parisian brasserie in the Latin Quarter, a little less self-important than some of the genre and the atmosphere all the better for it. Very helpful, professional and friendly staff, especially appreciative if you try a few words of French. The food is not, however, outstanding. My blanquette de veau was quite stringy and my... I've been here several times and always enjoy the authentic bistro scene. Usually the service is fine, but once it was very slow. I love the sole and foie gras (sorry). It is fairly expensive but worth it, in my opinion.

Balzar has been on our list to try, since it has long been a favorite of friends who live in the area. We visited once for lunch, and a few days later for dinner, and it seems that it is still a local favorite. We found the service to be very good, and all the dishes we tried were on... More

There is a real problem with this joint since it was swallowed by the Flo empire. I had the aubergines caviar with a poached egg. The egg was ice cold, with the white still runny and it was obvious it had been pulled from a fridge. The aubergines mix was ok. I then had the Tartare, which was nice. The... More

This is a great traditional Parisian restaurant. I love the way the staff have clearly worked there for years and know how to look after diners. The food is very good and is traditional such as Snails or Egg Mayonnaise to start and then steaks and many other choices.

Excellent service in this Brasserie with super friendly staff. Obviously very popular and loved by locals. The queue for seating is a good indicator! Brasserie menu, fixed priced menus available. Food was very good, wine excellent. But book! Open very late and cheap menu available after 10pm.

I booked this restaurant for my family after reading mainly good reviews (I should have paid more attention to the poor ones). The table was awful because it was jammed into a corner and made it very awkward to have a conversation. Then it was at least 15 minutes before anyone came to take order for drinks, etc. We were asked... More

We went to this Parisian brasserie (a one time favourite of Charlotte Rampling's) for many years and the food was extremely good, very French, the service unmistakably Parisien (haughty and rather condescending) and it was a real treat whenever we were in Paris. I think it has been taken over by a chain and unfortunately it shows. Definitely does not... More

Staying in Quartier Latin

Neighbourhood Profile
Quartier Latin
The Latin Quarter bursts with intellectual life, architectural splendour and ongoing merriment. The small streets are filled with classical buildings, student bars and lively eateries while the squares are dominated by historic monuments. The area is defined by the 800-year-old Sorbonne University, where Latin once prevailed, and is famous for the Pantheon which celebrates the great men and women of France. During the day students rush from classes to the library and intellectuals people watch from the terraced cafés. As night time falls the surrounding establishments fill up and the merriment really begins. The liveliest parts are around Rue Mouffetard, lined with crêperies and international street food eateries, and Place de la Contrescarpe characterised by terraced brasseries, this neighbourhood provides real nourishment for the mind, belly, and soul.
