This is the sort of fin de siecle restaurant that I have dreamed about. From the glittering decorated ceiling to the numerous waiters in their formal attire, I knew that a meal here would be a treat - it was. Politicians, journalists and intellectuals have made Lipp their home from home for decades, and the restaurant still retains an aura... More

My wife and I spent a 3-hour Sunday lunch (never have I done this anywhere) here and had a lot of fun. We both ordered different plate de jours and enjoyed the food. The ambience was busy and lively. There wasn't many, if any, English speakers in the restaurant. It appeared to be mostly locals when we went which made... More

I first went to Brasserie Lipp many years ago and loved both their style and the good honest French cooking. Recently I went back with my daughter for lunch, and we both enjoyed it so much, we came back for dinner the next day. The quality of the products remain unquestionable (I especially loved the leeks in a sauce vinaigrette,... More

I had only been there a few times before but returned with enthusiasm and happy anticipation. LIPP did not disappoint. It's classic brasserie food of superb quality, with some intestinal oddities from the Alsace region best ignored. It's theatre yet familiar. Deeply Parisian yet welcoming. Warmly recommended.

The Brasserie-Lipp Café-Brewery is located in one of the most picturesque districts of Paris - the Saint Germain des Prés district. Cafe Brasserie-Lipp opened in the distant 1880. Its founder, Leonard Lipp, came to Paris from Alsace, bringing with him the beer traditions of his native land. In the menu created by him, besides beer and coffee, there were classical... More

Although it's the sauerkraut that gets me in the door it's the île flottante that makes me linger. Lipp is always an "incontournable" when I'm in Paris.

A Paris classic that apparently lives off its reputation. We were treated with a kind of aloofness that used to be more common in Paris and that I find off-putting. The food is good but ordinary and the prices are high. Its certainly worth a visit to experience an old style Parisian brasserie, but only if you don't have something... More

We have been going here for years, and always been wanting to sit at the table in the front of the restaurant, which oversees St Germain. We had once spotted Bill and Chelsea Clinton there and always wanted to experience it from that view. We got it this time - maybe because it was the day when all of France... More

Feeling hungry and in need of some old fashioned pampering before meeting some clients I found myself being ushered to a single table in the front of this Parisian institution. One doesn't find high end haute cuisine in a brasserie but good wholesome classic dishes that are satisfying and hot. Lipp has all of the above served in style by... More

While in Paris, If you want to have a really good escargot you have no options left - go to Brasserie Lipp. Period. End of conversation. On the top of best ever escargot you'll get a really good taste of an upscale brasserie in Paris. Service, food - everything is worth the trip and money.

Staying in Saint-Germain-des-Pres

Neighbourhood Profile
Saint-Germain-des-Pres
In Saint-Germain-des-Prés, life is effortlessly chic and all things are beautiful. The main boulevard is dotted with famed terraced cafés, haut-couture shops, ivy-covered railings and fine-dining restaurants. Antique dealers and art galleries surround the fine art school and small museums hide in unassuming squares. The neighbourhood’s namesake church is the oldest in Paris and is the backdrop for talented musicians every weekend. The Luxembourg Gardens house the national senate, splendid lawns and flourishing flower beds. Famous faces and bourgeois Parisians frequent Saint Germain accompanied by the students of Rue Saint Guillaume and Rue des Saints-Pères. This is a neighbourhood where afternoon people-watching from a café or playing cards in a brasserie are a key part of the daily fabric.
