Closerie des Lilas is a good example of what Paris does well: restaurants that serve simple food, well prepared and presented, and at reasonable prices. Not in a touristy part of Paris, this restaurant caters primarily to a local clientele. Still, its location directly across from the Port Royal RER station and a short distance from the Port Royal Metro... More

We went to La Closerie des Lilas (brasserie) for dinner, without reservation. Very promptly welcomed and seated, the service was also very efficient and polite during the whole dinner ! No wait for ordering an apéritif, nor for taking the order; the plates followed very quickly and smoothly. Everything was good to very good, from the fresh oysters from Bretagne,... More

Lenin, Trotsky, Hemingway, and F Scott Fitzgerald all frequented this restaurant and it was the favorite much of Hemingway's novel the sun also rises he wrote on the terrace in just six weeks. Today the terraces ring with trees in the area is more elegant but much of the original Decour remains.

Nice setup with freindly waiters and a large choice of dishes. The set menu is not very rich, but the carte is affordable

My partner and I came here at 10:25pm this evening, we were greeted by a lovely lady who offered to take out coats, we opted to sit in the covered smoking area for some cocktails.. beautiful scenery but 15 minutes went passed and our order still hadn't been taken, we both agreed to wait until 10:45pm ... a waiter had... Attentive service and lovely food and wine. Not cheap but a very well run establishment. Ate in the brasserie and as it does not take reservations we arrived 1930 and had no trouble obtaining a table. The atmosphere, with the piano playing and Christmas trees lit up , was delightful . Food delicious and the rum baba always a winner... More

I was invited by a couple and we ate in the brasserie section, We were in a glassed room by the entrance. There is bad and slow, there is very slow and very bad service, and then there was our terrible experience. "It took for ever" is an understatement. The food is NOT good by any standard. We had duckling... More

I spent a lovely evening st the Closerie des Lilas for a special family dinner. Expensive yes , but it did not disappoint. The service was excellent. They were very attentive to the younger members of our group- the only children in the restaurant- and to the adults to whom they spoke in alternating languages. Food was very good also.

Staying in Saint-Germain-des-Pres

Neighbourhood Profile
Saint-Germain-des-Pres
In Saint-Germain-des-Prés, life is effortlessly chic and all things are beautiful. The main boulevard is dotted with famed terraced cafés, haut-couture shops, ivy-covered railings and fine-dining restaurants. Antique dealers and art galleries surround the fine art school and small museums hide in unassuming squares. The neighbourhood’s namesake church is the oldest in Paris and is the backdrop for talented musicians every weekend. The Luxembourg Gardens house the national senate, splendid lawns and flourishing flower beds. Famous faces and bourgeois Parisians frequent Saint Germain accompanied by the students of Rue Saint Guillaume and Rue des Saints-Pères. This is a neighbourhood where afternoon people-watching from a café or playing cards in a brasserie are a key part of the daily fabric.
