At the top of the Rue Mouffetarde you find this charming little square and this brasserie with outside seating so that you can watch Parisians hurrying about their business. I found the drinks expensive and the staff indifferent but hey, its Paris and that sort of thing is not uncommon and would not stop me going back.

Stopped in for a drink and maybe dinner. Very nice atmosphere inside. Smokey in general. Service marginal. Ordered Guinness, under-poured, flat and overpriced. Staff unconcerned.... No reason to stay for dinner.

When in Paris I live nearby, so I often have breakfast or lunch here. When you come in in the morning, the tables have been displaced for dancing in the evening. I like having breakfast in the book-lined area to the left of the entrance. There's a nice view of the place de la Contrescarpe. And convenient to shopping on... More

It's in the middle of all the action of Mouffetard, so you get some choice characters, especially in the smoking area, but overall it's pretty nice, and especially the interior, which is more classic. Prices are reasonable, although as often in France the Coke costs a silly amount!

Right at Place Contrescarpe with a heated Terrace for cold weather, including the winter, this has wonderful food and excellent service. This is my favorite café in Paris to have lunch and two people watch. It has all the traditional French classic dishes as well as some nontraditional, created dishes. The food is excellent

My daughter and I love this Cafe. We haven't eaten there but have visited for a drink or coffee many times. This time did not fail us either. We had two glasses of champagne as always the inside looked inviting on a cold November night and we were met at the door and shown to our seats. Love it!

During a tiring sightseeing day La Contrescarpe looked the perfect place to regain our energies, have coffee and people watch. This was not the place for that. The waiting staff were unfriendly, unhelpful and in the end downright insulting. When we enquired about wanting coffee, the waiter replied with 'is that all?'. We sat and ordered, our drinks arrived and... More

We keep coming back to this place for the perfect Parisian cafe experience. Coffee, drinks, conversation, and delightful atmosphere in one of Paris' most picturesque squares. Good service. Hemingway lived around the corner.

At the top of the street in Place Contrescarpe we stopped for lunch at the aptly named Cafe de la Contrescarpe. A perfect time to sit, relax, have a bite to eat and watch the world slide by while being serenaded by a young man with a guitar. . . I should think that takes no little amount of courage... More

My wife and I stopped in after our arrival in Paris. We had some meat and cheese which was excellent and I had a draft beer and my wife had wine. The server was great and loved the ambiance. We sat outside and enjoyed people watching.

Staying in Quartier Latin

Neighbourhood Profile
Quartier Latin
The Latin Quarter bursts with intellectual life, architectural splendour and ongoing merriment. The small streets are filled with classical buildings, student bars and lively eateries while the squares are dominated by historic monuments. The area is defined by the 800-year-old Sorbonne University, where Latin once prevailed, and is famous for the Pantheon which celebrates the great men and women of France. During the day students rush from classes to the library and intellectuals people watch from the terraced cafés. As night time falls the surrounding establishments fill up and the merriment really begins. The liveliest parts are around Rue Mouffetard, lined with crêperies and international street food eateries, and Place de la Contrescarpe characterised by terraced brasseries, this neighbourhood provides real nourishment for the mind, belly, and soul.
