MICHELIN Guide: Good cooking
The ideal place to discover or brush up on your caviar know-how (osetra, sterlet and baeri), as the owners have been raising sturgeon in southern Bulgaria for several generations. The plush smart interior and the chef’s “carte blanche” menus, with a traditional tasting session served on the back of the hand, are very popular.

Maison Boutary is a wonderful restaurant. The superlatives with which other reviewers describe their visits are certainly apt. Any visitor to Paris (or Parisien/Parisienne) intent on one (or at least one) expensive but wonderful lunch or dinner really shouldn’t miss this exquisite and convivial small restaurant with the red front on the Left Bank near Ile de la Cite.
But let me tell you a bit about the kind of hospitality you will find at Boutary. My wife and I are old folks from Canada. We had lunch at Boutary in November 2022. A great experience for us but a completely unremarkable and forgettable event for the maître d’ - you would think. In July 2024 we returned for a dinner - this time with a 20-year old grandson. Not only did Frederic remember our previous visit (more than a year and a half earlier) but a brief conversation we had on that occasion (he had provided a tip on how to choose a French wine when confronted with a menu of offerings of many wines about which you know nothing). And he followed that up a few days later with an email about our visit and meeting our grandson.
Maison Boutary is special.

We decided to dine at Boutary for a special birthday dinner, and overall, the experience was delightful. The service was impeccable, and we opted for the 7-course menu, adding the caviar of the day and some wine.
The amuse-bouche selection was decent, though the first dish, featuring mussels and white foam, missed the mark, even for me as a seafood lover. However, the fish in the crispy green tart was outstanding.
The caviar truly lived up to the hype—easily the best I've ever tasted. Our waiter wasn’t exaggerating when he said it would "melt in our mouths."
Most of the dishes ranged from very good to excellent. The standout was the sea bass with tomato purée and crispy eggplant, which was one of the best fish dishes I’ve ever had. The crème brûlée with cheese, mushrooms, and beef stock, as well as the beef dish with sweet corn and orange gel, were both exceptional. I also have to mention the potato dish with caviar and lemon sour cream—delicious.
However, there was one dish that really let us down: the main fish dish which I believe was monkfish, or some other white fish, with eel, miso sauce, and Asian pear. It was overwhelmingly salty and lacked balance as nothing sweet was really against the salty taste, making it almost inedible. The miso sauce didn't fit with the dish, almost giving it a soy sauce flavour. For a main course on such a high-end menu, this was disappointing and baffling. In our opinions it should be cut from the menu.
The palate cleanser, a strawberry ice cream with fresh fruit, was enjoyable, but a little cheap-ish for such an expensive menu. The two desserts however were underwhelming. The nougat ice cream with basmati rice sauce was a big miss, and the new desssert addition to the menu, consisting of chocolate and mushroom, was just okay—surprising given the quality of the rest of the meal.
The meal ended with passionfruit and tiramisu bites, which were excellent.
While the overall experience was very good, I can’t give the restaurant 5 stars due to the unfortunate appalling main fish dish and lackluster desserts, especially at this price point.
One small note: I would have appreciated having the menu at the table or access to it online, as it would have enhanced the dining experience by allowing us to better follow along with each course. Depending on memory alone for this review was a bit tricky!

Dear Helena,
Thank you SO much for such a detailed and useful feedback. It is of the highest value to the whole team.
We are happy to hear that you had great moments of gastronomy with Christophe's cuisine, although we deeply apologise for the bad execution of your fish course. It is indeed very possible that the plate and its flavours had been unbalanced as it was not executed accordingly to our Chef's initial instructions. Thank you for pointing that out, it was rectified the very next day and the dish works super nicely now.
About the desserts, I have to say that your opinion is not at all the one of other customers and I personally found them not only delicious but quirky and playful to the senses when I tasted them all again after your review was posted.
About the printed menu on the table, we are afraid it kills the surprise and takes over the multiple interactions we have explaining the dishes throughout dinner. We may have missed the opportunity to offer it, but we happily print or send in .pdf personalized and detailed menus, should you request it. Now I know, you will receive yours on the email you used to book !
Our menu changing often, I cannot encourage you enough to visit again when in Paris and we will make sure the magic happens 100% this time.

We are foodies in the New York City metro area who seek out superlative culinary experiences on our travels. The meals we eat on vacation often become the predominant highlight of our trips. This means we are extremely discerning about where we make dinner reservations.
After dining at Boutary five times over the last few years, we can say that Boutary is one of our favorite restaurants - not just in Paris but in the world.
They deliver the trifecta we seek but that is hard to find:
1) Outstanding, creative food
2) A cozy atmosphere that is stylish without being too formal
3) Warm, personal, and attentive service
The food experience at Boutary is based on surprises, so you choose either the 5-course or 7-course tasting menu and then sit back to see what they will bring. Not knowing what you will get adds interest and delight to each visit. I will dream about my entire dining experience there, especially their potato-stacked caviar and beef filet for a long, long time.
We cannot praise the service enough. Our server, Frédéric remembers us during each visit - even if it's been a year since we visited - and delivers such wonderful, warm service that it lights up our entire evening. For us, the service delivers the right balance of professionalism and warmth. Going there feels like we are visiting with a friend.
The setting is comfortable, and the interior design is creative and interesting, with a kintsugi-inspired effect running from the floor up onto the walls.
This restaurant continually fulfills - and exceeds - our expectations about what a superlative culinary experience dining in a food-oriented city like Paris should be. We can't wait to return.

Last night we had our best meal ever in Paris!
Our concierge had Boutary on its short list of recommendations, and the reviews are accurate. This restaurant was better than any we have eaten in on multiple trips to Paris, including 1 and 2 starred restaurants.
It was the complete package- staff, setting, food quality and preparation, wines, and food presentation. Frédéric was the server with whom we dealt the most, and he is friendly, passionate and knowledgeable. The rest of the staff were all very comfortable in dealing with us and explaining the dishes.
The food itself was beautiful, and exactly the right portion size- for 7 courses we like small sizes, but with strong and interesting flavors.
I wine paired as well, with the premium pairing. The pricing (as with the food) is far below the value you receive. We know wines fairly well, but there were 2 or 3 revelations and additions to our wine experience.
I also had the caviar optional starting sample, and absolutely loved their house caviar.
All of the staff were comfortable in English, although the night we were there it was a about an even split of French, and North Americans and some other nationalities dealing with the staff in English.
Do yourself a favor and go, before it gets truly discovered.

To be honest I was a little anxious as I was seated at our table upstairs by the window. Instead of a view of a Paris Street through the open window we had a view of the scaffolding at the front of the building and no further. My 1st thought was to leave but unfortunately we stayed. We both ordered the same 5 Course Tasting menu and a bottle of wine - the wine was good. But as for the tasting menu, we were expecting an explosion of flavor with every dish, but frankly it never arrived with any of the dishes. Most disappointing was the duck dish - it was so tough it was difficult to cut even with the knife that the waiter brought specifically for that course - neither of us could cut it easily so neither of us ate it.
I rely on Trip Advisor when selecting a restaurant and I saw lots a really great reviews and only one or two poor reviews for Boutary. Unfortunately for this restaurant the poor reviews are the more accurate reviews.

Dear John,
Thanks a lot for having taken the time to review your dinner with us !
We are truly sorry that it was not up to your expectations and even more sorry that we could not revert your mood throughout dinner despite our full dedication to our Guests' satisfaction.
I wish you had voiced out your anxiety when shown to your table. We have always offered several seating options and when some customers like our front dining room more, other guests prefer to be seated upstairs where the space is larger and brighter. We have never refused an alternative, provided we are kept informed of course.
The scaffholdings on our building are not the best of course but in any way should we be held responsible for them when the works are about the building over us and we had no word to say about it. On the contrary, my team worked twice as much to keep up our usual warm and elegant atmosphere inside.
With only 5 tables out of 20 in the restaurant having a window access, Boutary is more of a plate and wine watching restaurant than a street or people watching one !
About the meat course, our duck is cooked a special way that gives the skin a lacquered effect that may have a knife rip on it. We have obviously failed in explaining how to cut the duck filet on its side, and we apologise for that. It is such a shame though that you refused our offer to prepare a new cut of the duck, or veal or pigeon instead and did not even have a single bite of the course you sent back.
I would like to add as a conclusion that Boutary aims at providing a unique, inclusive and surprising experience where waiting staff and kitchen staff are working closely together as family, and there are a few things we collectively stand for. Our Chef's talent is one of them. I cannot let you say our cuisine is lacking flavours when countless customers -and our own taste buds- have told us how much of a flavourful experience our current menu is.
As you stated rightfully, having it right for 97% does not grant individual satisfaction (experience and taste being an utterly personal journey). But having it wrong for 3% may not be more conclusive either, and sometimes dinner is simply not up to one's taste.
We hope you will give us an other chance in the future, as our menu changes often and construction works are coming to an end.
Best regards,
Frederic and the whole team.

We chose Boutary for our one "high class" meal during our weekend trip to Paris. We were not let down at all. The welcome was very warm, the five course tasting menu was superb (99Euro each) and the staff eager to please and crucially happy to hear our comments and views of each course. They clearly cared about the food and fed our views back to the excellent chef...which is not always the case. The restaurant met all of our expectations and knowing this was a top quality venue we were very comfortable from a value for money point of view. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Our dinner at Boutary was outstanding. This restaurant is very special, with a warm and engaging ambiance. Frederic was so friendly and knowledgeable about the subtleties of the caviar and wine pairing we chose. The Chef’s passion was evident in every delicious course that we thoroughly enjoyed. This place will remain on our list of favorites when we come to Paris.

If I could have put 6⭐️ for the service. Kindness when booking asking us our restrictions and food intolerances. Respected of course. Very warm welcome and we were accompanied during dinner always with a smile and clarifications on delicious dishes, their composition and preparation.
Precise cuisine tasty and “weighed” both properly.
The chef being a pastry chef by training the textures and aesthetics were of a high standard.
Exceptional chocolate dessert
Thanks to the whole team 🙏🏼

Looking forward to Boutary I must admit I left disappointed. Staff were friendly, but pushing caviar on me did not leave a good first impression. The staff were aware that I am pescatarian and asked if I ate snails (I do!). Then the amuse bouche came and the chef did not get the memo. Oh well, a small mistake that was swiftly rectified.
Overall the dishes were good, but not memorable except for the potato and caviar, as well as the caramel dessert. Stale bread? Really? No thanks... This should not happen in a restaurant that strives to earn a star. A little rough around the edges.
Service was spotty: A missed butter order and the mixup with the amuse bouche can happen. But despite us clearly stating in French that we did not want to share desserts and that each of us wanted both of the desserts this wish was blatantly ignored. As such, I never tried the berry dessert, but, in hindsight, I am glad I had the caramel dessert which was superb.
The ambiance was pretty cool, but the horrendously loud Americans next to us pretty much spoiled most of the evening. Geez, get an inner voice!
I am not sure I would come back to Boutary. Does not live up to the hype.

Dear Helmut,
Thanks a lot for your visit and for having taken the time to share your opinion with us. We were sad to hear that the experience was a let down. Our Guests' feedback is always of the highest value and as so, be sure that your comments have already been thoroughly discussed with the team.
Although my colleague may have sounded pushy in English, caviar is our pride at Boutary and the optional caviar tasting to start dinner is a privileged moment for us to introduce our core product and the DNA of our Maison. That's why we always introduce this option with great care. As the caviar dish stood out for you, you may have liked the caviar taster option.
Our bread is freshly prepared for every shift by our 8 year-long partner bakery and is usually enjoyed by our guests. I am sorry if it was not up to your taste.
We always suggest to share desserts but cannot split them into two plates unfortunately. My colleague should have been more precise about that and I apologise for the lack of communication in that matter.
About your neighbours, they were 6 so probably noisier than a smaller party but my colleagues have assured me that they did not feel it was bad to the point they should intervene. A quick word from you to the team though may have solved this issue promptly.
Finally, I must add that I do not agree with pointing out a specific origin or nationality in your comments. Those could sound offensive and do not fit with our welcoming traditions at Boutary. Being American yourself is the best proof that it is not related to a specific country and after 20 years in the business, I've seen louder parties from everywhere :-)
Thank you again for giving us the possibilty of this exchange, and our best wishes for the rest of your Parisian stay.
Best regards,
Frédéric and the whole team - Maison Boutary

This is at least the 5th time we have come.
In addition to the exceptional cuisine, we systematically note that the team is very attentive, smiling and takes the time to present the dishes with passion. It is so nice and important for the gourmet restaurant experience.

My husband and I went to Boutary for our fifth anniversary. This was easily one of the best dinners we’ve ever had. The food was incredible. They specialize in caviar and have some in one of the dishes, and you can add more if you want - we went in not knowing much about caviar, but we left loving it! The waitstaff was incredibly attentive and kind; their service certainly elevated the meal even higher. Truly a wonderful experience. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We visited Paris as a girls trip to celebrate two big birthdays amongst the group of 5. We were recommended Boutary and would definitely be recommending others here. We all had a fantastic experience with the host Frederick being so welcoming, knowledgeable and passionate when explaining to us about the caviar and food. We all throughly enjoyed our experience here dining with the 5 course menu with caviar.
It was a few of our first time tasting caviar and dinner will be a memory we keep!

Amazing, one of a kind experience! The food was delicious, intricate, and artfully prepared. The staff was amazing at explaining everything and ensuring that we had a full appreciation of what we were eating and drinking. The caviar was fabulous. We've tried a few Michelin starred restaurants and sometimes have found them underwhelming, but Boutary exceeded our expectations with their hospitality and delicious tasting menu! Would highly recommend!

We dined here and had the five-course tasting menu with wine pairing, caviar sampling, and sparkling wine. Yes, fresh caviar is relatively expensive, but it was worth the experience. Our server was very thorough in explaining how to enjoy the caviar, and it was very helpful. The remainder of the dinner was well prepared and presented, and service was friendly and excellent. In one particular example, the kitchen made a slight oopsie on a particular dish. Our server noticed and compensated us with one additional serving from the other tasting menu. We did not ask for this, but it was very thoughtful of them. Overall, it was a fine dining experience, and we hope that they will see a Michelin star in their future.
