A friendly couple receives you and invites you to the courtyard surrounded by history. The restaurant has good ambiance. The food has all it needs: taste. originality, beauty, and variety. You can't go wrong here. Good advice leads you to culinary heights.

We were recommended this restaurant by our hotel receptionist. It is a very attractive venue in a small road in Avignon. It is family run and the front of house service is both pleasant and knowledgeable. The food is definitely a cut or two above usual restaurant fare. Each course was extremely individual, with little touches that put the food... More

We come back to L'Essentiel every time we are in Provence, as it hits the mark on every aspect - food, service, ambience (especially in the lovely courtyard). The food is not only delicious, it is creative, whimsical, surprising and consistent from one meal to the next. They also have a wonderful wine selection. It is not a big restaurant,... More

We were recommended by the receptionist in our hotel to try this restaurant. We were so glad we did. A very warm personal greeting on arrival. The menu was restricted to 2 menus €36 & €48. The choice on each menu was mouthwatering. We sampled all that we could. Service was excellent, we were given helpful advice as to food... More

Having eaten in restaurants around France for over 40 years, I have never been in one like this for a very long time. The food is exquisite and the service is second to none. I congratulate the owner and ALL the staff for all their energy, skill and attitude towards the customer. I really believe that L 'Essential should have... More

This was our favorite dining experience in Avignon. A warm, cozy and friendly restaurant. The service was very attentive. The food was fabulous, and overall a great value considering the entire experience. It was simply flawless.

Came here on our last night at Avignon as a treat. The service was amazing, but perhaps my expectations were too high, because I was underwhelmed by the food. We got the set menu and while the food was tasty, it was not very exciting or particularly memorable -- it was good, not great. I thought everything was fine, but... More

The owners are the chef and his wife. Very elegant food. If you think chicken is boring, you have never been to this place. The menu changes every week, and my wife and I were so tempted to go back to this restaurant 2 days later to see what new things they had. (It didn't happen, but my sister mom... More

We were a largish group, the restaurant was full but the service was excellent and friendly. The food is delicious, they use seasonal foods so lovely chestnut soup with accompaniments that made it special. The main dish was also put together with imagination to bring out the best flavours. Good wines. We will definitely return when next in Avignon.
