We had such a fun night here. Spent ages trying to find it as it had been recommended by a friend but our hotel didn't have internet so we couldn't look it up then I happened across it in our guidebook - so glad we did. Service was great - staff really cool and friendly. The waitress said we'd have... More

We stopped in here a couple of times during a long stay in Berlin. We liked the funky, local atmosphere, good prices and friendly staff. Seemed like mostly locals and regulars despite its guidebook mentions. Very good flammkuchen; the maultaschen (kind of like big ravioli) special at dinner was nicely executed but bland. Liked the Rothaus wheat beer.

This restaurant (and it's a bar too) was recommended to us by Anna at The Circus Hotel as local, German and atmospheric. It was all of those things. We ate there all three nights of our stay - we didn't feel we needed to find anywhere else. Old age creeps on. Jet lagged after flying for 1.1/2 hours from London,... More

Went on a lonely planet recommendation, and arrived at ten on a Thursday- it was busy but we got a table.Great ambience and really nice staff. Two of our party had the ravioli type dish that seems the house speciality- it wasn't great and this might have been because of the lateness, I am not sure. Both of us were... More

We'd intended to go to this restaurant while in Berlin & stopped by early one evening without a reservation. The place was packed, but we lucked out getting a table. The food was really wonderful and they serve their own version of the German ravioli-like pasta called maultaschen. Their preparation was a bit different than those we'd had before in... More

Overrated place from Lonelyplanet. Food seems warmed in the microwave, waitress not nice to customers, poor selection of beer. Easy to find much better place in the same neighbourhood.

I only had one evening to spend in Germany. A couple of work colleagues suggested we unwind at this local haunt and I'm so glad they did! It's not a terribly big place, but it's quite charming. There's a mix of comfortable furniture with regular dining tables and a few booths at the back. The bar is long, but there... More

My other half and I ventured to this place on our second night in Berlin. We were staying in Mitte and fancied some 'German food' close by so we chose Schwarzwaldstuben. The restaurant has a great atmosphere - very homily and cosy and a great choice to eat or drink. We had not booked but the lady on the door... More

We've had a great night out! The menu doesn't leave you with alot of options (about 8 main courses) but the smoked pork with sauerkraut was downright awesome! They take the traditional german dish to the next level. The atmosphere was great, and even on a sunday night the place was very popular with locals and tourists. The waiters took... More

Whoa, another almost long wandering search! I had the street address, #48, and was looking for Schwarzwaldstuben. Well, passed by up to #50, then went to the corner, turned back, found 48 which was apparently an apartment building. Place on the corner appears to be named RothausBrau, a glance thru the windows showed the deer antlers and such, so we... More

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
