Focus on what this straightforward restaurant does best and you'll be amply rewarded. I know it's a Spanish cuisine trope, but the roast suckling pig at El Cardenal is, indeed, succulent.... Crisp, sweet skin giving way to moist, beautiful meat, with just the right amount of fat to keep things interesting. It was the finest version I either saw or... More

Charming and cozy restaurant and outstanding roasted whole suckling piglet (their specialty)! Ordered the set menu and it didn't disappoint at all. 39 euros per person...unbeatable!

Lovely atmosphere, gracious waiters, food....could be better. Definitely worth having lunch here in such a special surrounding, but next time I would order a la carte from the menu. The waiters were all delightful. Not Micheline but quite correct food and service, also fair price.

This restaurant is part of a beautiful hotel in the northern wall of the old town. It is charming and very local-looking in spite of the mostly foreign clientele. We enjoyed the gastronomic menu for two which includes four courses and a bottle of wine. The dishes were typical of the region and absolutely delicious. We took advantage of our... More

This is a great place for an al fresco dinner. The restaurant is part of the hotel's courtyard and creates a great ambience for dinner and conversation, especially at dusk, when the soft lighting of the place complements the "blue hour" of the evening. The menu is good-- I literally devoured the entire roasted pig suckling as soon as it... More

This place is all about the location - which is really lovely. The food and service would, in any other circumstances, be a bit run-of-the-mill, but hey! - How often do you get to have a reasonably priced meal, served by reasonably competent staff in such a spectacular place? So, ignore the negative stuff, sure, the food isn't brilliant, but... More

The location is excellent, with tables in a small courtyard, surrounded by soft lighting once the sun goes down. The set meal, which included wine, was a good selection of tapas, and a good sized main course. The wine was pleasant. The service was OK.

We were in Spain for 3.5 weeks, and this was our favorite meal of all of them. We stayed at the hotel, too (also great), and had walked through the restaurant on the way to reception. It was very nice then, but it really transforms into something magical (laugh if you want) at night. The lighting is perfect, the music... More

We sat at the bar and got drinks. I had to get up and serve my self before anyone offered to help. Look for a smile amongst the staff if you can find one. Did remind me of where's wally books. Once seated you got a feeling that all they wanted to do is go home. The meal it self... More

Enjoyable for a dinner. It has an exterior area of garden with tables set with candles. Good food, medium range prices. Important to make reservations for dinner. Located near the “Puerta de la Bisagra” and the “Puerta de Alfonso XV”. Highly recommended.

Description
The Hostal del Cardenal is located in an 18th century Toledo palace that has been converted into a three star hostel. The hostels restaurant, in an attractive setting surrounded by gardens, offers traditional Spanish cooking, featuring roast suckling pig and lamb cooked in traditional Castilian style in a wood fired oven, and Toledo-style partridge casserole. Desserts include the marzipans and marquesitas (small pastries) that are typical of the Toledo region. There is a special area set aside for childrens games and in the summer the terrace is a great spot to enjoy a meal with friends.
