Excellent Japanese food in Spain.

We were walking around in Barcelona near our hotel and noticed this restaurant. All of us enjoy good Japanese food so we decided to have dinner here the following evening. The restaurant does not open for dinner until 8:00pm so I reserved a table for 8:00. All of the staff were very attentive to our needs and very friendly. A manager named, I believe, Elizabeth spent time with us and answered many of our questions. The restaurant was not very busy but this was on a Monday night. I have to say that we enjoyed everything that we ordered. The presentations and flavors were very good. We did not try any rolls. We ordered several items from the small plates, sashimi, Wagyu Sukiyaki and Ramen. The Octopus and Kimchi salad was excellent and we should have ordered more. The Ponzu Oysters was good with a different touch thanks to the Ponzu. The Bluefin Tuna Tartare (Toro and Oyster) was very good. This gave you a combination of the tuna and the saltiness of the Oyster for a very different flavor. I seldom order Miso Soup because of past bad experiences; however, their Shiru Miso Soup was excellent. The quality of the Sashimi was excellent and I would highly recommend ordering your favorites from the menu. We had the Toro, Sake and Saba and all were of excellent quality. The Wagyu Sukiyaki was so good. It is difficult to say what my favorites were because I truly enjoyed everything that we ordered. The Ramen was good but was not as expected; their presentation was different than other restaurants. The Soufle Matcha Tea was very good but is a small portion size. We do plan to return to Barcelona in the future and this restaurant will be on my list to visit again.

Praise for a wonderful experience

The food was among some of the best Japanese/Japanese fusion we’ve ever had. Sandro was a fantastic server who gave us fantastic advice both on food and sake pairings. It was one of the best meals we had in Spain.

Delicious meal, friendly service

We had a great dinner here in April 2023 (on vacation from Toronto, Canada). The food was like many other Izakaya restaurants we've been to: delicious. We were at a table and could see the chefs preparing the food; watching dishes being grilled on the bright flame was fun. The Ibérico Surprise and the Wagyu beef dishes were both a delight, and the Matcha Souflé was a wonderful dessert. We enjoyed a great meal, with friendly service, we would definitely return.

Service was miserable but the food was good.

Despite many attempts, we could not get the staff to understand that we wanted a lot of wasabi and that we wanted all sushi dishes served at the same time. Unfortunately, it ruined the whole restaurant experience. We sat alternately and waited for the wasabi and for the dishes that we wanted to eat at the same time. It's so easy to ruin an experience.

Good but cold atmosphere

Pretentious, very noisy, cold. A big restaurant, like a factory, buzzing, with lots of staff but hardly paying attention to us. Manager scolding waitress in front of clients, waiter not apologising when we showed hair in our rice. Food was good, ramen and miso tasty and generous, oyster with delicious ponzu, tofu good, but almeijas were oily, vaca vieja tataki so so and pricey. Good champagne. But very noisy and overall we didn’t feel looked after well. A restaurant is also a pleasant human experience, not only about food.

One of the best meals in Barcelona (gracias Erika!)

My wife was really craving sushi after a week in Barcelona/Europe. We could not have made a better choice. From the start we had an excellent experience, and we had Erika to guide us along the whole way, she also recommended a great bottle of wine (dry enough for me but not too much for my wife; fruit forward but not sweet). The food was incredible. Best eel I’ve ever had, sashimi was sooo fresh and so good, AND they had black sesame ice cream!!! Next time we’re in town, we will be back. This was the perfect way to end our honeymoon.

Tried a change of pace for our last night in Barcelona and was not disappointed. The place gets great reviews and totally earned them. Erika was fantastic and suggested an amazing white wine for us to try, and the ponzu oysters were incredible. So good we ordered more! The sushi was also fantastic. Would definitely go back if we return to Barcelona.

Terrible toro sashimi

I lived in Barcelona for 7 years until 2017 and since then I've visited many times. My lunch at Ikoya Izakaya was the worst meal I ever had in Barcelona! The toro sashimi was terrible. It tasted as if it had spoiled. The color and smell were suspicious! I felt sick later in the evening.

Good ambient, bad location, low quality ingredients. The idea is nice and the staff is GREAT, but is maybe because of the poor location and the low food quality that we won’t come back.

Bad bad bad

We went to dinner for a change of pace after six days of Spanish food. The hotel recommended it and gave the impression it would be hard to get a time. They got us a spot within five minutes. The restaurant was maybe ten percent full. This was a very disappointing sushi/Japanese food experience. The rolls were very loose and to the point they fell apart using chopsticks or hand. Four servers kept asking how it was right after another. They also constantly changed out plates that weren’t used. The entire experience was odd. I would stay far away from this for sushi. It was expensive for the quantity and quality of the rolls.
