Dolceria De La Colmena
Review
About
La Colmena is one of the oldest cake shops in Barcelona. For more than a century it has delighted "Placa de l'Angel" square, where it is located, with it's fragrant aroma of home-made candies and cakes. The exact date it was founded is unknown, but we do know that its original name was "Ca l'Abella". In 1849 Rosendo Abella had the shop in the street "Bajada de la carcel" (the prison slope) now called "Baixada de la Llibreteria" (Bookshop slope), situated just in front of the current location. In 1872, the Costa family purchased the business, moved to the current location and changed the name to La Colmena. But maintained both names at the front of the building. Later, the shop changed owners from "Morato i Sant Pera" in 1912 to "Chocolates J. Camps" in 1921. Finally, in 1927, Josep and Francesc Roig Manubens bought the business which is now run by the grandson, Josep Maria Roig. Toni Roig, Francesc's great-grandson and Josep Maria's son, makes the candies following the same recipes and methods centuries ago, like many other traditional Catalan pastries and cakes

We visited here twice during our visit to Barcelona in mid-March. Once on the recommendation of a friend and once during our Secret Food Tour.
On our own, I learned that there were plenty of treats for me to eat with my dairy allergy. One of the saleswomen spoke good English and helped me pick out a half dozen little pastries like panellets de pinyons, a giant chocolate meringue cupcake-thing, truffle-sized marzipan-based pastries (some with filling), and sweet fruit candies. We also got a small bag of honey candies for the friend who recommended the bakery.
Everything was packed up nicely and cost us less than €20.

We stopped there by chance and tasted their lemon meringue cooked in parchment paper. A delight!
Nothing to do with the texture of the French meringue that we expected. We eat it with a spoon, it is creamy inside and meringue outside. We went back to taste the other perfumes!

Pastry shop with over a century of history.
Already the windows tempt you to enter, and once you cross the threshold you reach a magical world where the scent of good, and the sight of dozens of delicacies, are a promise of sweetness for the palate.
A promise that, in our case, has been more than fulfilled.
The restaurant does not have a tea room, so it does not allow consumption "on site". But the care with which the products are packaged to enjoy them at home, allows you to face without problems even a journey on the subway.
We enjoyed an ensaimada and a fresh tartaleta de higos; the latter is a typical dessert of the Festa de la Mercè, and was superb.
Pastry shop that deserves more than a visit.

We got a recommendation from our guide to try out the traditional xioxo (I think that the name ) and the other one that looks like a little ball and filled with cream
The xioxo was excellent - soft dough (a little like a donut ) filled with custard and some orange flavours . Really good (4/5). The other one was not great - we did get the chocolate filling (they make the same one w white cream ) but the dough felt very dry and not very tasty (3/5).
A nice experience to try if you're in Barcelona

There was never a line when we visited each time. There was always so much variety of pastries, cookies and desserts to pick from that it took us awhile to figure out what to order. The staff pretty much ignored us until we made our decision. However when we decided to add more to our initial order they got annoyed so that was a bit surprising given that there was no one else waiting in line. We decided to ignore this as we enjoyed most of our purchases.
Our favorites were:
Xuixo pastry filled with crema catalana
Matrimony cookies
We won’t order these again:
Coffee meringue was much too sweet
Pistachio povorone was just ok

This is a must in barcelona! Beautiful building easy to find in the gothic quarter. The staff were friendly and understood English enough to get our orders right. We had a pastry, tart, meringue, on the first day of our visit and went back for jellies and hand made chocolates 😋🤩😍

Omg - the xuixo de crema are the best thing I’ve ever eaten! A light doughnut filled with crema de Catalan, we ate one for breakfast every day. Beautiful traditional patisserie near Jaume 1 metro. And try their torron too. Everyone makes a fuss about Escriba but this place is the best

The food is incredible — my friends and I got so many different chocolates and pastries, and each item was more delicious than the last. Plus, the workers are so kind! It was such a great experience that we went back the next day. I wish I could come here all the time!

I have been multiple times to this place. It is a wonder.
The internal design of the place and the outside are very unique and typical. Hopefully they will not touch these.
I once went to buy a box of chocolates (nothing too fancy) and the owner wrapped the box. I told him it was not a present so he didn't have to go through the trouble.
He replied: 'Chocolate is always a present'.
Gold.

He went twice, when visiting the city.
The first day we ate chocolate palm tree which was exquisite. Also dark chocolate cracker with nuts (good snack for tourists).
The second time I ordered meringue. I didn't take any chances and ordered it with a natural flavor. But knowing how delicious it was, I would have ordered the lemon one, which I'm sure will be delicious.
Don't forget to take the number when you enter.
Serious, but kind clients. Without any problem.
According to what a city guide told us, since we ended the visit in the Plaza de la Colmena, this place's days are numbered. A shame.

This is one of the oldest pastry shops in Barcelona, dating to 1800’s. It is located in a town square as you enter the Gothic District. Everything looked beautiful and the cookies we tried were delicious. They also sell chocolates and nougat treats. My favorite was the homemade hard candy, called caramels, but very different than a chewy caramel that we have in the States. It comes in many flavors including honey (miel), lemon (limone), pineapple (pina) and coffee (cafe). I will be ordering more from their website to be sent to the US.

La Colmena is one of the oldest cake shops in Barcelona, selling a range of goodies. I stood at the two front windows salivating at all the items. There's much more to see in the glass counters inside. We had just had lunch and purchased a few biscuits to go, but I would have loved to try the other pastries. Worth a visit!

We stumbled upon this beautiful bakery, with really beautiful windows, full of sweets for the feast of los reyes. We bought a roscon de Los reyes, some pastries and some handmade candy. All delicious. Too bad about the uncourteous staff, we seemed to bother them. And to think that we said goodbye and thanked and I speak Spanish fluently.

This was the first bakery/pastries/cake shop I saw when reaching Gothic quarter. Looking at the display of so many pastries/sweet through the huge window, I couldn't resist going in to try for the first time and it was my favorite snack place. Love their croissant, it's drier and less buttery than the French version, but tasty nonetheless. It also came with many version (ham, sausage, multigrain, sugared..) to choose from. They also had very decent coffee to go pair with the pastries. Another thing not to miss is their traditional snack, chocolate with different nuts, and their Torro. A great place to get gifts for friends and family.

We had been in Barcelona barely an hour and checked into our hotel and went straight out to our Tapas Walking Tour, but had to wait outside for a short while so decided it would be a good idea to pop in here to take the edge off our hunger.
We only had a couple of sandwiches but they really hit the spot (which to be fair most sandwich shops here do) and set us up for our night ahead. We didn't have call to be in the area again otherwise we would have certainly sampled the cakes which looked fantastic.
