Cafe style restaurant with old school elegance. Attentive and professional waiters. Bring your Spanish when you eat here. We had trouble understanding a few of the offerings on the prix fixe lunch menu and were surprised to get pigs knuckles as our entree. The chilled avocado soup was superb.

Although this place looks incredible the service is dreadful. We were greeted by a waitress who didn't know how to smile and shoved us at the end of a desolate upstairs. After being sat down for 30 minutes and being ignored profusely as well as hearing the waiters being rude to other customers we chose to leave. On leaving we... More

From the outside the restaurant looks fantastic, and inside it is even better with beautiful retro décor. However, after those initial first impressions I am afraid that El Gran Café is simply average. The service wasn't very good – we were shown to our seats and given menus by one waitress and then had to wait a long time until... More

I was resisting going there initially as it looked like a bit of a tourist trap but by teh end of the evening was quite happy with our dinner. Nice atmosphere and service was quite attentive! There was piano music which also contributed to a nicer and more romantic setting (most of the restaurants in Barcelona have no music!?>!?!?!). Prices... More

I stumbled upon this restaurant having arrived late in the city looking for some sustenance. The decor and atmosphere is very nice and it was a pleasure to listen to the live pianist. I was surprised at the quality of the wine given the relatively cheap price, however I would say the food was just ok. I had paella and... More

Whilst wandering the streets of Barcelona on our last evening of our short break away we came across this cafe, and although we hadn't booked we were quickly shown to a table. With it's dark wood interior and someone playing a piano it was all very relaxing atmosphere . The menu was not extensive but after ordering our drinks and meal... More

Situated right opposite our hotel and recommended by the staff this was rubbish. On a arrival we were shown a table by a lovely member of staff. We were seated and waited for over 15 minutes before a waiter came over to take a drink order, he was rude and was too busy talking talking to other members of staff... More

One is immediately seduced by the restaurant interior. It reminds to the grandeur of the Wiener cafés. Unfortunately, beside some well priced quality wines on the wine-card, those are the only plusses to report. Nor the turbot (21,90 €), nor the beef filet (22,30 €) were convincing. Very small pieces of fish and meet, not the cuisson asked for, barely... More

Nice environment like Viennese cafés. Very good service and friendly. Salad and starter were nice. We asked for the meat to be medium and it was rare and overall the main dishes were not so good.

We were very hungry and somewhat tired after returning from a day long journey to Girona and Figueres. It was around 7:45 pm, no reservations on St. Jordi's day! El Gran had many open tables, looked quite established.. inviting and convenient to our Hotel. We were given a window seat, which was terrific.. and an oversized table for two. The... More
