I was expecting more from this restaurant. Our starters were just ok, as was my fish. Husband's lamb was excellent, which saved the rating from being even lower. Service was slow and it was one of the more expensive meals we had in Madrid.

We visited in April. Loved this restaurant. Found the staff to be very efficient and also friendly. We saw a table having a really good crab dish. We had no trouble ordering the dish off menu for another night. Staff could not have been more...More

Wandering along Calle Preciados, looking for a spot for dinner, we selected Café Varela out of many, many possibilities. Although the food did turn out to be very good, the service was horrible. It's hard to even put into words how bad the service was....More

I ate dinner here and ordered a filet well done. Normally this is a risk because many restaurants seem determined to burn the meat. Not here. My meal was perfect! It was cooked perfectly and without any charring. The service was professional and helpful. I...More

A lovely classical Madrid restaurant based on an original cafe of the same name, very welcoming and attentive staff, good food (large portions) (we had croquettes, soup, steaks and custard dessert with a fine albarino wine) and a pleasant ambiance in the main restaurant.

I was with a group of friends who went here for a meal. Service was good and the food was of a great quality.

A beautiful and somewhat old fashioned restaurant with formal but caring staff. Many thanks for making my mothers 80th birthday a special memory!

Needing a refreshment break we chose cafe Varela after being greeted warmly and shown to a quiet and comfortable table for two. Excellent service with well prepared and perfectly portioned plates for lunch. The “exquisite hake” was just that. Highly recommend.

We started with Chicken consommé and vegetable soup which were ok. Then we had veal rib eye which came with chips! Nothing in the menu tells you what it comes with and I asked the waiter but he couldn’t understand. I don’t eat chips and...More
