We'd been on the bus tour and just got off and were frozen so popped in here for a warm up. We ordered an Espresso and a glass of wine each and this came with a bowl of olives. Service was very good. The place is small and old world or rustic. Prices were good, just over 2 eu for... More

I 've been in Madrid in 2014 and had some excellent dinners and tapas. This year I was in a 7 hour connection and put on my plans to have lunch on this place. For me, they serve one the most authentic samples of Madrid's food. Fantastic value to money: 10 euro for the lunch menu of the day. For... More

We just happened to be passing by and decided to pop in for an early lunch before the crowds. As a couple we were given a bottle of wine when we ordered the 10€ menu. We really didn't expect a lot in the centre of Madrid for that much but were pleasantly surprised. My sea food paella was very good... More

So so good! This place has a great variety - anyone can find something they like. I got one of the tostas with strawberry and chicken and my husband got steak and eggs. Both were absolutely delicious. Our waiter was so nice and helpful, too.

Only a small bar but very friendly, we watched Real Madrid with a few enthusiastic supporters, great atmosphere, the food looked and I can vouch for the beer

We stopped as this is on the corner of the main square, and we saw menu of the day 10 euro. We certainly got that, a 3 course meal with bread and a glass of wine. There was a choice for each course as well, all cook well and quickly, this is real fast food. Well worth a visit for... More

We were staying in a flat across the street from the Gran Cafe, and one afternoon after a long day about town we strolled in mostly because all the other places were crowded and noisy and this place was cool and quiet. Great surprise, the service was friendly and quick, Oscar made us feel right at home, the food very... More

We are culinary enthusiasts and were very pleased with the lunch menu, which was 10 euros p/p with great recipes and ample serving sizes. We recommend the Pollo con papas and the gazpacho. Both were excellently crafted and at such a reasonable price for the tourist area surrounding the cafe. We will be recommending to friends and family!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
