We had lunch. Average entrecote. Tasteless pasta. Pretty expensive (for Madrid) 2 courses set menu. Not very friendly staff. Smoking is welcomed at the outside places.

We came across Pozo Real and decided to stop for early lunch, 1.30, early for Spain. Turned out to be a gem. Friendly staff, food very fresh and a great change from the seemingly endless greasy tapas found in tourist areas. We shared the salad mixta and fried anchovies, perfect for a light lunch on a warm day.

The food is not bad, the main problem is the cleanliness and the service staff, during supper I had a big cockroach running up and down my leg. I killed it and threw it to the side, the staff didn't even bother asking us why we where jumping and once they saw the cockroach didn't apologize.

I stumbled upon this place just walking by. I ended up stoping in at least one time a day on the rest of my trip. The food is AMAZING!!! the French have nothing on this place. I had the "the plate of the day" special and no matter what I ordered, I loved it!! The place is family owned and... More

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
