This place looks like the time stood from the Civil War, no wonder why it was one of Hemingway's favourites! They serve Jerez wine, so be ready for it and don't go if you don't like wine. We also had a cecina (one kind of cured meat) tapa and they gave us for free some olives when we ordered. Both... More

Great place - just sells Sherry (4 different types) at about 1 Euro a glass. Some tapas if you want them, bar staff have no english and not a lot of interest in trying - but with a charm, bill is chalked on the bar and I challenge you to spend more than 10 Euro a head and stay for... More

The guide books warn you this place is basic, with sherry the only option and a very limited range of tapas to nibble with it. Thats all true. Its also aimed at the locals, some of whom seemed to have been coming here (or perhaps sitting at the same scruffy tables) for decades. So if you that's what you want,... More

Excellent atmospheric Sherry bar. Only 5 sherries, each served with some food. Incredibly cheap. Totally memorable. Wonderful

This place is really Spanish, and as some people have commented, I don't think the bartender speaks English at all, or is interested in doing so. However, I have a tiny bit of Spanish and this was enough for us to be served, to choose our snacks and for him to apologise to me and correct a mistake in the... More

We stayed in an apartment a couple of doors away. What an amazing place. Tried all of the sherries and tapas. Just go and soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the sherry and have a taste of the lomo, queso and other delights. You need to be a Spanish food and drink aficionado, it is not a place for amateurs.

Having read a review of this place it was on my list of places to go. Stopped in for a sherry and a couple of very simple tapas, wow, this place looks like it hasn't been touched in hundreds of years. No kitchen as suck, tapas just prepared for you by the barman, jamon, queso, not much choice, not much... More

Wonderful little bar where you really can feel tide of history. Rustic in a fantastic way. Manzanilla, fino, amontillado, oloroso and palo cortado straight from the cask which is by far the best way to drink it. All to very affordable prices. Also som minor dishes if you are hungry.

His is sherry and tapas and that's it, don't visit if that's not what you want. But saying that both are just perfect in a bar that's like a step back in time. The sherry is white, red, dry or sweet, that's it, it's not hard.

There seem to be more tourists here than would once have been the case, and if that means more sherry enthusiasts, I guess it is to be welcomed. There is no better place to sample the range of sherries. I never miss at least one visit every time I am in Madrid

Staying in Huertas

Neighbourhood Profile
Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.
