My wife, two children and I ate dinner here in December 2016. The Hegar is in Plaza Mayor. As with all the restaurants in Plaza Mayor, Hegar seems a bit touristy. We had a table upstairs with a good view of a side street and part of the Plaza Mayor. I had boqueronas and onion soup and they both tasted... More

The service was rude, and most of the food that we ordered wasn't particularly good. We spent New Years eve there and were extremely disappointed at the quality of the meals and the service. The location is great and it has a nice view on the square, but would suggest to go to another place on the square if you... More

Expensive due to location (great for people watching). Service was mediocre and drinks tasted watered down. The food was of good quality though.

Spent 4 days eating and drinking my way through Madrid and unfortunately this was a notable lowlight. The food took ages and was cold on arrival. The beef and brie tapas looked like it had seen better days. Service was slow and impersonal. Find something nice in the nearby covered market instead.

Ate here on my partners birthday had booked a table but resteraunt was very quiet. Had cheese sharing platter for starter very disapointing a few slices of cheese with no garnish or membrillo hardly enough for one and at 15 euros very overpriced.I ordered suckling pig so was prepared to wait just as well because we certainly did wait and... Decided to have lunch here in the Plaza Mayor. The set lunch had choices for each course. I had the Mixed Paella starter and was amazed at how generous the portion was, I could not eat it all. We had fish for main and 'Flan' for dessert. With drinks our total bill was less than €25, which we thought was... More

Stopped for a late tapas lunch in this plaza. Service was excellent however the tapas was average and a little overpriced. Enjoyed the lunch as we were tired and needed something to eat and a place to sit and relax. Nothing wrong with this restuarant however not a great value.

Out of all the restaurants in Madrid, don't waste your money here! Food was awful, none of us enjoyed it and had lots of food left over so when the waiter came to take our food we told them we weren't happy and he just said we had to pay because we had eaten it and wouldn't apologise or anything... We had a terrible meal here. Paella was stuck, boneless lamb bad bones. Charge for bread which wasn't asked for and service was abysmal and was ignored when spoke to manager about this. Rude people and homeless take your food

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
