Been in the place 4-5 times: everything tried here is really good at a very fair price (spaghetti bolognese 6€, pizza margherita 6€). The place is like a cafeteria, popular and messy but the waiters are attentive and food is tasty with no sophistication, simple and effective. Not a good place for desserts though.

Two visits to this establishment. Was not disappointed with the meals on either of the two occasions. Not too expensive compared to Mama's across the road to this tavern. Always busy which again was a good sign.

We walked by this small unassumming restaurant and was lured by all the locals eating there. The waiter was very friendly and recommanded their favourites dishes to us. All the dishes were excellent, very tasty, very reasonable priced. We had an excellent time enjoying the dinner.

Great value for money Taverna. Lots of reasonable quality food and drink, but a great feeling not being ripped off in a major city. House wine Euro 3 fr half a litre !

Our hotel recommended this taverna and as we were exhausted (& it was close by) we tried it on our first night in Rome. Taverna Pretoriana offers an extensive menu of traditional Italian favourites. The service is prompt & good, the atmosphere is friendly & warm and the food is delicious. Even the complimentary bruschetta was a nice touch. This... More

A warm welcome, attentive service and great food - can't fault this place. Our starters arrived really quickly - antipasto di mare, and melon with parma ham - both really tasty. Then the mains (mussels; spaghetti carbonara) shortly after and both excellent. Great wine at a bargain price. Lots of locals here who seemed to be enjoying themselves - well... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
