The meals we had were extremely good and we felt really welcome as guests - especially when we booked a table for a second visit after being so pleased.

The service was fab, the staff were very professional and allowed us time between courses to rest, but unfortunately no amount of time was enough to recover from the excessive portion sizes. Tasting menus are meant to be exactly that, a taster of a normal menu, not 9 courses of full sized dishes. At the end we felt near on... More

We visited this restaurant on a Friday evening with a friend. The food was tasty but way too expensive for what it was. We had two starters, 2 mains and two glasses of wine, resulting to approx. 90 euro. It looks a bit posh and "upmarket" but feels a bit stiff and not so welcoming.

On our last two visits to the city in February, we have dined here 4 times, and have never been disappointed. From entering the restaurant we were met with a very warm welcome which continued all night. We always linger over the menu with pre-dinner drinks, choices made just the wine to choose, we then sit back and await the... More

My wife and I had the tasting lunch at this excellent restaurant. The nine or so dishes were innovative and well presented. The portions were especially generous for a tasting menu and the service was of the highest standard. The potato mousse deserves particular mention. People should be aware that this restaurant specialises in meat dishes, a welcome change in... More

Agree with other reviewers that this place is fine but way, way too expensive for the quality of the cooking. It might be in line with other places in Venice, but would not survive in almost any other Italian city. The main waiter is also surly and snooty, in a way that makes the guests (not just us) feel quite... More

A pleasant welcome and a nice woody ambience were upsides at our lunch, as were a 'complimentary' mixture of salad vegetables. The disappointment was the bill. We had half-portion main courses only, half a litre of house white wine, a glass of red, four not that great espressos, and two bottles of mineral water. The bill for four was about... More

Ok, over 40 years of visiting this magical city has confirmed that food is not a highlight of the Venice experience. In these days of social media at least we can honestly warn fellow diners against making the same mistakes we have. I'd suggest people read the Italian reviews on this restaurant and take heed. Over priced, poor quality, mediocre... More

What a lovely experience this was! We went for a late lunch since our flight was in the evening after spending the morning at the Guggenheim. The restaurant is a gem. the simplicity in the dishes, but with a focus on quality and taste. The server was so knowledgable about the wines and what pairings go well. I highly recommend... More

Ai Gondolieri restaurant in Venice is something special in the Venice dining scene – a kitchen that concentrates its menu on meaty dishes of the mainland rather than the typically fishy fare of most other eateries here. A short walk from the Guggenheim Museum and the Accademia (take vaporetto 1 or 82), Ai Gondolieri enjoys a magically romantic setting in a genuinely old inn with its own arched bridge over a picture-postcard canal. The dining rooms are not splashy or over-decorated, with wood panelling, modern seating, white table linens, ceiling fans. Nevertheless this place attracts the starriest visitors to Venice, from presidents to film stars. The upmarket menu changes seasonally, featuring dishes like deep-fried stuffed zucchini flowers, breaded deep-fried lamb served beautifully pink, superb steaks, excellent risotto. Your host will chat in English with you about the all-Italian menu.

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
