generally venetian food is pretty bad mainly aimed at the tourist trade ie bare minimum and expensive with jaded service [who can blame them with so many tourists] This place was by far the best meal we ate .For starters the staff looked like they cared service was good ,food excellent and at a price cheaper than several other very... Tucked away in a tiny alley, this restaurant serves excellent food. We arrived without reservations, but the friendly staff managed to get us seated in a reasonable time. The suggested food items are delicious although portions may be small to some. Wine choice is excellent and cocktails are crafted expertly.

Hidden in a quiet street in San Marcos. Dropped in with the family without a reservation - no problem although it probably is better to make a reservation. We were not disappointed, the food was excellent. Service was friendly and efficient. They do not want you to write a review on Tripadvisor and that says a lot. I´m doing it... More

What a little gem of a restaurant tucked away in a small courtyard between San Marco and La Fenice. Reservations are a must! Service is warm, informative, unhurried and friendly - with great wine recommendations (Barbera was a great, lower-mid priece choice). Food is exceptional and quirky including: salmon tartare served with a glass of sparkling elderflower, 'underground' (a mixture... More

I was looking for somewhere a little bit more than the usual Italian fare and decided to try Ai Mercanti. The staff were friendly, attentive and welcoming. The menu promised something a little different and I wasn't disappointed, delicious food in lovely surroundings and not at all too expensive so close to Piazza San Marco. Highly recommended, one of the... More

We went here after reading the Trip Adviser reviews. Although we love Italian food it can be all rather similar. Here the menu is a bit different with beautifully prepared food very imaginatively served. The first courses we had were beautiful to look at and very tasty. The fish for the Secondi was beautifully cooked. The waiting staff were very... More

One of those restaurants you could write a book about. The manager/owner seemed on edge and that relayed to customers. There was obviously a kitchen issue as service was really slow but no attempt was made to let diners know. When the food came it was fantastic and the codfish main course was the best fish course of our holiday.... More

Ristorante Ai Mercanti in the heart of Venice between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco is an upmarket, romantic restaurant in very cool style that enjoys a high-flying gastronomic reputation. The vaulted dining room is decorated in sophisticated terracotta and black with impressive shining globe lighting. The bar is wittily decorated with dressmakers’ forms and sexy corsets – great conversation starters. The menu is classically-inspired Venetian of a high order, focusing on things from the sea and changing every two months to take advantage of the and array of the freshest ingredients in true Italian style and pastas and desserts are all made in-house. In warm weather the dining room sprawls out onto the adjoining campiello for the loveliest al fresco dining anywhere – the Venetians who crowd Ai Mercanti certainly think so.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
