This restaurant was recommended by our hotel. It is ideally located in a quiet area, away from the tourist flow, along a very nice canal. We dined really well, fresh fish, chosen by the chef according to the market and the season. Everything was delicious and the service was very attentive and friendly. Special mention to the Torta della mamma (a recipe from the chef's mother). Honestly congratulations and thanks to the chef and his team. We'll definitely be back!

We would not be surprised if Osteria Trefanti will show up next year in Guide Michelin recommendations for Venice, it would be well deserved! This is a remarkable seafood restaurant where everything it expertly prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Service is very warm and knowledgeable. Great wines and recommendations. Trefanti is located along side the Rio Martin about a brisk 20 minutes walk from the crowds at the Rialto bridge. 30 minutes if you get lost in the labrynith of narrow streets in Santa Croce, like we did, arriving a bit late to our reservation.... You will find a small Osteria with just 10 tables and only 2 seatings per day at 7pm and 9pm. As in all Osterias, there is a limited menu with 4-5 items for the appetizers, primi and secondi in addition to daily specials. You will miss out if you do not make a reservation, which is highly recommended.

This is a charming and welcoming, diminutive restaurant with a specialty in seafood and directly bordering a quiet canal. You can sit outside or inside. The wait staff, born and raised in Venice, were so appreciative and very knowledgeable about the food. A delightful, romantic dinner.

On second visit we were not sure that this small restaurant was as good as it tries to be. The attitude is very welcoming and professional and the manager is attentive to all needs but somehow the fish did not have that extra bit of panache we felt a year before and the bill is somehow quite high. . But certainly try it and see. Beware the manager's favourite Sicilian organic dry white wines which are not to all tastes (except perhaps that for day's old West Country scrumpy dry cider)

Three slices of bread and some breadsticks. Starter: the tasteless octopus, the sauté of mini mussels and mini clams, seasoned with rosemary, an absolute novelty. First courses: tonnarelli with fish and chopped hazelnuts, also completely tasteless, ingredients not mixed but put together at random. Inedible. Sent back. Stellar prices. I gave a dot only for the kindness of the two waiters.

We headed here for dinner one night in Venice; the restaurant is on a quiet street. It’s a tiny little establishment—a couple of tables outside and less than 10 inside. Charming, rustic atmosphere. Our server was warm and welcoming and quite knowledgeable about the dishes on offer and the wines. We split a nice pasta to start. The star of the show was the fish. We both ordered fish as mains—the grouper was prepared with some wild berries and had an unusual, delicious flavor. The sole was perfectly cooked and its sauce was delicious. A really nice experience! Would definitely put on the list for Venice.

Small, cute... and expensive tavern. Pleasant atmosphere, expensive but good quality dishes. Very little choice of wines for less than 40-50 euros, a bitter at the end of dinner is 8... let's say not exactly like a tavern...

Osteria Trefanti in the Santa Croce neighborhood. Very delish and unique. Gnocchi in an anchovy sauce with cinnamon and saffron, Dover sole on the bone and sea bass, then chocolate cake and almond torte for dessert. A truly excellent meal.

A spur of the moment choice. We just liked the look of it as we walked past the night before. We did not book and we were lucky they could give us a table for two at 7pm. They were apologetic that we would need to be out by 9 ish. What a joy it was. From great starters of scallops with pineapple, don’t mock it was amazing to octopus and main courses of turbot with capers and sea bass with fruit the meal was amazing. The ambiance was just right. GO and have a great meal. Try the Veneto wines as well.

As already pointed out in a former review, I first visited Osteria Trefanti in September 2018 and since then treasure it as a culinary highlight in Venice. So I could not wait to be back, and felt extremely privileged to spend FOUR exceptionally delightful nights here during my stay before Christmas. As I see it, Umberto's cuisine has even got more balanced, letting the perfectness of the ingredients sparkle… he is definitely my favourite chef. What has changed since my first visit: Chef Umberto is now supported by Maitre Simone, who is the perfect and most sensitive link between the kitchen and the guests in the dining room. I have to follow a special diet which not always makes it easy to dine out, and may sound like a nuisance to people who do not understand. – But I will never forget the moment when Simone sat down next to me in order to take his time and talk to me – literally – on eye level about what Umberto should prepare to make me happy. Needless to say that those taylor-made dishes – for instance the beloved capesante, which I tried in three different versions; puristic best-ever fish with polenta and herby potatoes; and gnocchetti with prawns, to die for… – were fantastic, and, as far as I am concerned, cannot be compared to anything else in the world. It's all about the Venetian spirit of hospitality and passion… and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere with always a smile or a joke in the twinkle of the eye. Grazie infinite, Umberto & Simone e tutti del team, per serate indimenticabili piene d'amicizia e d'ospitalità - o posso dire: VENEZIATÀ! Non vedo l'ora tornare ad Aprile… Angelika

This little restaurant has everything to recommend it. It is a delightful space, the food is top quality and beautifully cooked and the staff could not be more obliging. When I swooned over the Chocolate Bonne dessert - definitely not one to miss - the chef even promised to send me the recipe. Does it get any better than that? When we arrived we were hungry and had walked across Venice to get there. Portions are generous and the whole experience left us feeling that we were cruising back to the hotel.

We were a walk in and were quickly seated. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Food was excellent with beautiful flavours. Wine was very good too. I would have to say this is one of the best restaurants I have visited, everything was paced well even asking is would we like a break between courses. Kudos to the chef.

If you haven't made a reservation, please be there on time at 7pm. A little later, there's no free table. Not until about 9 a.m. The menu for 80 € was fine. However, the pictures pretend otherwise. The best fish and crustaceans were not available that day. But the 3 courses were well and nicely arranged. The tuna wasn't quite my taste. The boss explains everything very well, but no German. I didn't expect that either. Based on the reviews so far, I expected more.

I just had a delicious dinner in this very Venetian restaurant. Everything is local.. From the fish to the team 😊 I am Italian and I know what I am talking about! Best food ever!!! Amazing service from the waiter and very funny and professional sommelier. We had the privilege to meet the chef/howner.. A very charming gentleman. They treat us as loyal customers even if it was our first time there. I wanted to have a nice and romantic weekend in Venice with my fiance and I have to say that having dinner in this amazing place made everything even better. Thanks to all of you guys for the very welcome treatment.. We really appreciate it.. (and loved the mom's cake for breakfast) Keep going with the good and hard job. Valentina from Trieste.

Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
