On arrival we were greeted by Lorenzo (Son of the owners), who offered us seating in either the larger or smaller dining area, we took the smaller. It was very comfortable and gave the feel of a quality restaurant. We chose a couple of anchovy appetizers that were excellent, My wife tried the Ragu special which tasted superb, as did my fish... Perfect evening. The welcome, the warmth, the knowledge of the staff on food and wine, and the food itself, all were just right. We didn't want to leave, and when we did we were given recommendations to other restaurants as Al Covo was closed the next two nights. But we will be back next time we are in Venice. The... More

Owner Diane, a Texas native, greeted us at the door with great enthusiasm. This is a locals restaurant very close to the Riva Schiavoni, but still off the beaten path. Wonderful service, attentive and friendly servers and good food!

The food and owners were fantastic. We are going back this week and cannot wait. We all had the specials but the place was full of locals who were ordering their favorites. Lovely evening for us and our teenage boys.

Not much more to add to the title. We were very well looked after and would strongly recommend you go for wine by the glass to accompany the food. Great choice of fish and a really lovely atmosphere slightly off the beaten track. However the competition is fierce in Venice and we found the even smaller places a bit more... More

The food was excellent and you must save room for the home made desert. This was truly a family owned restaurant. The father was the host, the mother was the hostess and desert creator and the son was our waiter. We had a wonderful walk from our hotel near center of the City to the restaurant. Ask for specific directions.

Being from Switzerland, we're no big sea food connoisseurs. Nevertheless, we trusted the Al Covo team and chose the fish tasting menu with wine pairing. We didn't regret it, it was a true discovery for us! Finding a good restaurant in Venice is not easy - there are too many pasta and pizza places, which is ok if you're not... More

Read amazing reviews of this restaurant and waited too late to make a dinner reservation but was able to secure a lunch reservation instead. Service was impeccable, staff explained everything and the suggested wine was really good. The pasta fagoli soup and the linguini with clams were to die for. My son had the lamb and he said it was... We had an amazing lunch in this lovely little restaurant. For starter we had the best gnocchi we've ever had and a seafood linguine. Then for main course we had lamb which had been slow cooked for 48 hours. We had 2 different red wines recommended by the sommelier which were lovely and complimented the meal perfectly. Highly recommended restaurant... More

This restaurant features a well-balanced menu—a nice range of seafood, pasta, and meat. After enjoying so much Venetian seafood elsewhere, we opted for a few meat dishes here. The highlights were the bronzino tartare, the gnocchi special with lamb, and beef cheeks in Amarone sauce. The service was superb, and we decided to leave the wine pairings to the staff;... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
