The chef whilst only 29 is inspired and cooks with honesty, humility and an absolute respect for food. This is not about trying to beat other restaurants, this restaurant is about trying to please the customer. Staff are both welcoming and informed and the level of customer service is outstanding. There is rumour that the best tiramisu in the world... More

We recently stayed in Venice for 4 nights and on the second night, ate at the Hostaria da Franz which had been recommended by our hotel. Maurizio, the owner, is not only an entertaining character but is so passionate about his restaurant and the food on offer. We opted to go with Maurizio's recommendations and enjoyed one of the best... More

This was a birthday present from my daughter who arranged it for us. We were greeted by the owner Maurizio with a glass of Prosseco and then he personally went through the menu which consisted of locally caught seafood explaining each course eloquently and in detail. we chose from his suggestions . I had red mullet for starter and my... More

Been there with my wife as recommended by the hotel. The resturant is very cozy and the owner (Maurizio) is just amazing, very helpful and goes beyond expectations. The food was great and the seabas fish was very testy. Tramiso very desert and you are in other world. Highly recommended, only negative is a bit difficult to find

I have been coming to Franz for many years. From the first visit to the last (yesterday) every meal has been an experience to treasure. Venice down the centuries has kept to its traditions and at the same time taken on the best of the new esp from the East. And that is exactly what we had last night. Superb... More

The original owner passed three years ago and his son Maurizio took over and truly made it happen. He greets you and then tells you the menu in three courses. All items are local be it fish, shell fish or vegs. We started with the raw platter, excellent, three types of raw shrimp, ombrine, sardi en soar. Perfect, Then risotto... More

It has actually been 6 years since we were in Venice, ahhhhh how sad for us. But I was looking back through some pictures and saw all the amazing food at Hostaria da Franz. We loved it so much we changed our schedule for the last evening to come back again. The eel was spectacular (our 14 year old son... More

What a find! We were staying In Castello and this restaurant was 3 minutes away! Fantastic fresh local cuisine predominantly seafood! My type of place. Run and owned by the host and his wife. Fourteen tables you should make a reservation on weekends or busy evenings. I had razor cams in spaghetti, unbelievable delicious. A grilled local fish with artichokes.... More

Delicious and special. These are owners who, justifiably, take pride in their restaurant. The service is hands on and the food was magnificent. We had octopus, razor clams, spaghetti with clams, monkfish, bream and chocolate mouse and glade pears for desert. Absolutely excellent.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
