Since 1984 this venetian family is running the Hostaria da Franz, here the quality of the local product are suggested respecting the tradition but with a gourmet twist. The wine list has very rare gems from the best italians labels. The ambience is very romantic and elegant but not formal.
MICHELIN Guide: Good cooking
Founded in a different venue by an Austrian soldier in the late 19C, this historic Venetian restaurant is now run by owner Maurizio, who oversees the front of house in a courteous yet friendly manner. He introduces guests to its variety of dishes, which aim to please rather than surprise. Fish specialities are to the fore here.

I was first in this restaurant in 2015 and I had kept a beautiful memory of an amazing New Year's Eve dinner. After almost ten years I am back and I must definitely confirm my positive feedback.
The restaurant is elegant and attention to detail, with a welcoming atmosphere and a highly professional staff, discreet and never intrusive. A special mention goes to those who were in charge of the wine service: often in restaurants there is a tendency to continuously fill glasses, with the aim of running out of bottles more quickly, but leaving the customer to drink hot wine. Here, however, the wine management is impeccable, with attention to timing and temperature, allowing you to enjoy each glass at its best.
In this restaurant you really feel at home, without the feeling of being in a tourist-catching place. Although the clientele was mainly international, the dishes were authentic, respectful of Italian tastes and flavors, with a touch of creativity looking abroad. A cuisine that manages to surprise, while maintaining tradition. I will definitely be back!

Everything tastes great in Italy, right? wrong!! After having a bad experience in a very reputable restaurant last night we were truly skeptical about tonight, until we took the first bite of our first dish. Out of this world .. What an amazing experience this was .. If you are in Venice make sure you make reservations and make it in advance.

Maurizio is the perfect maitre, and also owner, of this beautiful restaurant that took over from his dad.
He is welcoming his guests with a smile, exquisite kindness and fluently in french and english and obviously his Italian is pretty good too :)
The ambience is traditional but not heavy, the mise en place is simple but sophisticated. Everything is thought in the details. Nothing is left to chance, Maurizio is taking care of everyone with attention, you will feel spoilt.
The menu proposes dishes of the Italian and Venetian tradition revisited with a fresh touch. It is not a simple meal, it is a sensorial experience. Embrace it. Dare always, you won't be disappointed.
Last but not least compliment to the chef for mastering the ingredients in such perfect way. You guys are a definition of italian excellence. Thanks, you made my day. È sempre bello tornare "a casa".

This was hands down the best meal I had during my two weeks in Venice last year; I cannot wait to return. I went for dinner on Christmas Eve per the recommendation of my hotel concierge. The restaurant was filled with what seemed like local residents rather than too many tourists, and the server and staff were very welcoming, which I appreciated as a solo traveling dining alone on Christmas Eve. The food was phenomenal, and the restaurant ambience was cozy and perfect for a chilly winter evening. Highly recommend!

We had the chance to dine at this restaurant for New Year's Eve. Everything was perfect: from the welcome, to the service and of course the plates. On this occasion, the chef gave free rein to his imagination to revisit local specialties, to our greatest delight! Finally, we appreciated the efforts to present the dishes to us in French. In short, an exquisite moment to leave 2023 and return in the most beautiful way to 2024.

Very nice discovery, beautiful and good Italian dishes with quality ingredients, even the bread is excellent! Special mention for the Asado beef marinated for 24 hours, then cooked at low temperature for 24 hours and finally grilled over charcoal. Thanks to Maurizio for his welcome and his professionalism :)

It is always a pleasure to return to Franz. The dishes, from the local Point of Sale, are of excellent quality, cooked with finesse is authenticity. The room is extremely nice, and the warm welcome. The mascarpone cheesecake finishes the meal on a visually and tastefully very original Rating!

Very good Venetian cuisine personalized by the chef; warm and attentive welcome from Maurizio and a slightly old-fashioned setting but that makes it charming and peaceful at the end of an alley. Friendly and efficient service. We had dinner twice in a row with great pleasure.

We happened to get the tip through friends, if we go to Venice, then we should go to "Hosteria da Franz" for dinner. Said done: Table reservation made and we were not disappointed. The boss with his nimble waiters looked after us in the best way. The food and wine were top notch and we were pleased that mostly locals were in the restaurant. The hostaria is a little off the beaten track and is not easy to find. On this way we extend our best wishes to the team and are convinced that we will be happy to come back. All the best!

So good we went back the following night- superb atmosphere, food was amazing - the family that own and run it were amazing and explained the whole menu to us so we ended up having things we wouldn’t normally have and thoroughly enjoyed it. Cannot recommend this enough and it was a great find as we probably would not have seen it had we not been recommended to go there. All local produce- wine was superb and not expensive at all. We tried most things on the menu between the four of us over two nights and not one dish disappointed us.

Starter: some salad leaves, some shrimp from the lagoon, touches of guacamole. Good products but uncreative dish, a little sad.
Dish: breaded mullet with an eggplant “sausage”. Good products but it was dry, sad presentation

We had a really lovely dinner here during our stay in Venice. The atmosphere is simple and traditional. While the cuisine also is traditional and simple, this friendly and welcoming family owned and operated restaurant is trying different takes on classic Venetian cuisine. Our appetizers and and first courses were delicious. My fish crudo tasting plate was amazing - 6 different fishes (incl. scallops and shrimp) were wonderfully prepared. It is one of the few times I have had raw scallops or shrimp that weren’t slimy. These were truly delicious and their flavors shone through. The pasta made with 5 flours with snails shared with my husband was wonderful. The squid appetizer and ombrina ordered by my husband were also delicious. The weakest was my mackerel which had Asian (i.e., soy sauce and wasabi elements) but the fish was slightly overcooked and the Asian flavors did not come through. This is a wonderful restaurant with a charming family and delicious food. Go.

This restaurant offered a meal as good as any we've had in our home city, New York. That's for starters. Everything served is local, skillfully prepared, and while often inventive, everything was very successful. And as for the service? Don't get me started. We were served by the owner and his son, and they are passionate about their food! This is Italian food, to be sure, but it bears no resemblance to most of the other restaurants in Venice that tourists might typically encounter. That's no slight against the generally great food in Venice, but Hostaria da Franz is a Michelin-starred restaurant for a reason. Take at least one meal here on your trip, and make sure amazing family treasures like this stay around during these trying times. Trust me, it won't be a sacrifice.

All of us have this expectation of a great Italian meal. Simple, high quality ingredients that are well executed in a nice atmosphere with friendly service at a fair price. Seems simple enough but how often are these expectations met. Maybe 1 in 3 for us.
Hostaria da Franz is that 1 in 3. Their Vitelli Tonato is terrific as is their sea breem. Great service. Nuf said. Go

Historic, elegant and understated forward thinking restaurant with enthusiastic family management. Using the advanced skills of youthful Venetian trained chef and sommelier/waiter (and 4th generation family owner), the menu is both old and new with the freshest ingredients and exquisite plating. Be sure to ask for wine choice that best complements your selections, and plan to have dessert!

Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
