We didn't know it's recommended by Rick Steve's travel guide. Went there cuz of the recommendation by our Airbnb host - had a wonderful night there! Saw the mixed reviews below and I can understand why people aren't happy with the service. The waiters aren't very efficient, kind of all over the place actually. So the queue is always there.... This restaurant near our hotel was our favorite in Venice - largely because of the seafood. We were in Venice 4 days and ate at Al Mascaron twice. They do not try to pull you in. In fact, you almost have to know that the restaurant is there - nobody out front hawking their services. And that was appealing (and... More

A personal recommendation the night before turned out to be a disaster, so we consulted our trusty Rick Steves guide for our next meal. This was the best decision! This restaurant is cozy and full of character (and characters). We ordered the Bolognese for two with a side salad. There was plenty of tasty pasta for both of us, and... More

Hi, If you are looking for taste of local food you will get it here. Nothing fancy but food is good as it gets with spaghetti. House wine is good and the price was ok as well. Enjoy!

About half the dishes were unavailable at 8.30 pm, the day after a bank holiday. The food that was available was good value for the money. The restaurant itself is very plain in its presentations with some interesting art work and pictures on the walls. Food and service were what we would have expected for the price.

Authentic old-world Italian restaurant. NOT a tourist clip-joint and, perhaps because of this, it might be struggling with its popularity. Very busy, so patience required.

If you are in the tourist area (even if it isn't in the heart of it) it can be difficult to find a place for lunch that isn't a complete rip off. Al Mascaron was a little more expensive then it should be but the quality is reasonable and the staff (owners?) were very friendly. The spaghetti bolognese doesn't look... More

We wanted to eat at a restaurant that was more local and less touristy - and this restaurant fit the bill. The food was very good - pasta and seafood. Our waiter was wonderful - friendly, appropriately attentive, and quite funny. This was a bit of a walk from our hotel near St. Mark's, but was well worth it. We... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
