We came here for the first time 7 years ago and never forgot the restaurant. We had such a wonderful experience that we decided to take our daughters here. The restaurant does not have a nice view but that does not matter. The food and personal service do the rest. The food is excellent and you feel very welcome. Do... More

It was our anniversary, so we decided to splash out. The food is gorgeous, no doubt. But the prices are really high. The tales about the lasagne are all true, it is divine, and 'only' 15 euros for a small portion. If I were eating here again I would have 2 portions and save a fortune!

After searching on Trip Advisor prior to our trip, I came across Osteria Oliva Nera. Although the reviews were mixed, most were good so we gave it a try and were glad we did. The restaurant is noted for their Fried Zucchini Flowers which should not be missed as an appetizer! A salad misto was shared along with the zucchini... More

Nothing special. Food is overpriced . Be careful about wine recommendations! Red wine Oliva Nera is nothing special but very very overpriced.

We went here on the back of TA reviews and the service was great but we were very disappointed with the food. It was expensive (30 euros per main course) and no better than the other restaurants around the area. Of the three nights we were in Venice this was the worst and the other 2 we paid less and... The concierge at our hotel recommended this restaurant and it did not disappoint! We have been traveling in Italy for 3 weeks and this was by far our best meal! The black linguine with shrimp was so flavorful and the chicken livers were absolutely delicious. The wait staff were so pleasant and congenial. A must when you are in Venice!

We just loved this place. The place was incredible and the staff did everything they could to make our visit enjoyable. The food, service, and ambiance was Italian and beautiful. Worth it!

This restaurant came highly recommended by "foodie friends" and we now know why! While overwhelmingly busy because of the opening of Venice Biennale, service was still both personal and professional. Our dinners were delicious, focused on seasonal, fresh fare and we were thrilled when it was suggested we try the appetizer that was a house specialty as we hadn't known... More

Osteria Oliva Nera is a gem of restaurant and should be sought out for authentic Venetian cuisine. The menu is developed around regional offerings and is sophisticated without being unapproachable. Service is efficient and friendly and offers the feeling that you are part of the family without being intrusive. The wine list is diverse with selections from throughout Italy and... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
