La Grotta di Leo is an accidental find. We passed by the restaurant from Santa Maria Novella station on our way to our accommodation. We were so hungry after check in so we decided to go back and have a quick bite. That was a life changing moment. We ended up coming back each meal on our 4 day stay... More

We ate at this restaurant on April 20 with six people. We ordered three different pizzas, three different pastas, prosecco and red wine. Nicola was our server and he did a great job.

Been dining here for 20 years (although I think different owners during that time). Informal dining with outdoor tables make this restaurant on via della Scala a great place. Fabulous pizza!!! Met the chef once and he knows what he is talking about. Underrated for all kinds of food which is excellent. Varied menu offers just about everything. Opens early... More

My mum, sister and I were staying very close to this restaurant at an airBnB on via della scala in March 2017, so thought we'd try it out one night. We were very surprised at how large the restaurant was, considering it looks small from the road. The food was excellent, we had a number of steak and pasta dishes... More

Mum and I called here one evening but didnt want a full meal. The staff were very accommodating and very pleasant. I had a plate of gorgonzola and a glass of Chianti Classico. It was perfect. The place was busy with a lovely atmosphere.

Had the best Italian meal that I've eaten at this restaurant for a fraction of the cost of other meals eaten in Florence. It is a traditional trattoria and clearly popular as there were people waiting for tables almost throughout our meal. Service was quick without being rushed. Th choice of wine is limited but was very good nonetheless. I... More

If you are in Florence you must try this place. They have a good selection of pizza at very good price and they are tasty too. Just house wine on the list but it was alright. Large limoncello serve for just 3€.

The choice here extends well beyond that of a pizzeria. There is a full range of traditional Italian pasta dishes and main courses, a good winelist and other drinks available. It is busy but service is good and there is no pressure. We found everything well cooked and presented. Although we are not great pizza fans, thsoe nearby looked fine... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
